Even if Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is a success, it’s unlikely to match one particularly strong element of the finale of Star Trek: Discovery. Discovery was the leading series for Paramount+’s Star Trek television shows, airing for five seasons between 2017 and 2024.
Following the conclusion of Discovery, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds became Paramount+’s main Star Trek show. Currently, only Strange New Worlds and Star Trek: Starfleet Academy remain in the franchise. Season 4 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will begin streaming on Paramount+ on July 23, and the show’s fifth and final season is anticipated to arrive in 2027.
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds continues the story from Star Trek: Discovery, starting in 2259, shortly after Captain Michael Burnham and the USS Discovery traveled to the 32nd century. It’s become the most popular Star Trek series with both longtime fans and new viewers.
Star Trek: Discovery’s Love Stories Have Happy Endings
The final episode of Star Trek: Discovery, titled “Life, Itself,” is predicted to be more impactful than the upcoming finale of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, even if Captain Pike’s conclusion is well-received. Discovery stands out for its multiple love stories that all reach satisfying conclusions.
The finale of Star Trek: Discovery featured the wedding of Ambassador Saru and President T’Rina before leaping forward in time. The couple, a Vulcan and a Kelpien, became a popular pairing with fans, and their wedding was a romantic beach ceremony attended by family and friends.
In Star Trek: Discovery, Captain Michael Burnham and Cleveland Booker rekindled their relationship after a split. The series finale showed that they are still happily married thirty years later and have a son named Leto, who followed in his parents’ footsteps and became a Starfleet Captain.
Throughout its run, Star Trek: Discovery prominently featured Dr. Hugh Culber (Wilson Cruz) and Commander Paul Stamets (Anthony Rapp) – the franchise’s first gay married couple. The series concluded with Hugh and Paul still happily married and raising their adopted daughter, Ensign Adira Tal (Blu del Barrio).
The series Star Trek: Starfleet Academy continues the story from Discovery, showing that Commander Jett Reno (Tig Notaro) from Discovery found love with Commander Lura Thok (Gina Yashere). Even after Reno began teaching at Starfleet Academy aboard the USS Athena, romantic connections continued for the crew of the Discovery.
None Of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’ Love Stories Will Last
While Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is known for its space-based romances, none of these relationships are meant to last. The show is building towards the events of Star Trek: The Original Series, and as it does, the current love stories will come to an end.
The third season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds concluded the romantic relationship between Captain Pike and Captain Marie Batel (Melanie Scrofano). It’s doubtful Pike will find a new love interest before the series ends. His eventual reunion with Vina (Melissa George) on Talos IV won’t happen until the Star Trek: The Original Series episode “The Menagerie” in season 1.
Season 3 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds featured three central love stories, and unfortunately, none of them seem likely to have a happy ending. The unexpected romance between Lieutenants Spock and La’an Noonien-Singh (played by Christina Chong) developed this season, but it’s clear their relationship won’t last, and a split could happen as early as seasons 4 or 5.
The budding romance between Nurse Christine Chapel and Dr. Roger Korby is destined to fail, as they have a history as former fiancés in the original Star Trek series. Similarly, Ensign Nyota Uhura experienced her first romantic connection in season 3 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, but that relationship won’t last either, considering Beto Ortegas doesn’t appear in the original Star Trek timeline.
The new series focuses on the early days of Captain James T. Kirk (Paul Wesley), showing the beginnings of his close friendship with Spock and the eventual formation of their iconic trio with Dr. Leonard McCoy (Thomas Jane) in the last episode of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. Kirk’s greatest passion, however, remains the USS Enterprise.
The ending of Star Trek: Discovery felt complete, despite the fact that the final episode, “Life, Itself,” wasn’t initially planned as the series finale. Discovery established a high standard for the Star Trek: Strange New Worlds finale, but expect less focus on romantic relationships aboard Captain Kirk’s Enterprise compared to Captain Burnham’s Discovery.
