Star Trek: Discovery cast understood it was hard for some fans to “wrap their hearts” around the series
As a dedicated Star Trek fan who has been following the franchise since its original run, I must admit that I was initially skeptical about Star Trek: Discovery when it first premiered. The changes to the visual aesthetics, characters, and even the universe itself were jarring, to say the least. However, as someone who values innovation and growth within the franchise, I chose to give Discovery a chance.
Star Trek: Discovery didn’t receive universal acclaim among Star Trek fans upon Paramount announcing its release. When the series initially premiered, it was met with numerous criticisms regarding the contrast between the new Trek and the classic Trek that aired from the 1960s to 2005.
In a unique twist compared to any other vessel, both the design of Discovery and its Klingon and crew members stood out distinctively. A variety of new and revamped alien species were introduced, but so was a fresh method of travel using the spore drive. This innovation, however, wasn’t universally welcomed by fans who voiced their dissatisfaction openly. Yet, as series lead Sonequa Martin-Green shared in an interview with Variety, the cast of Discovery remained receptive to these diverse viewpoints, refusing to let fan disapproval dampen their spirits.
Martin-Green noted, “However, these individuals are intelligent and loyal, expressing their sincere feelings. They had valid concerns, and it was appropriate for them to voice their viewpoints.” The cast portrayed the characters and followed the storylines provided to them, but they weren’t involved in deciding how the narratives developed or creating new species or future progressions. Nevertheless, they were the ones who bore the majority of fan criticism.
According to Martin-Green, starting a new “Trek” series is always challenging. It seems like this is part of the tradition – a rough start is expected. Other versions have shared similar experiences, stating that it took viewers some time to embrace them, and we’ve experienced the same thing too.
Some people might argue that Discovery didn’t resonate with them, and there are still numerous criticisms about the series. A significant portion of the criticism has centered around Sonequa Martin-Green, who handled the complaints graciously despite undoubtedly finding it challenging to face the negative feedback regarding her acting abilities.
Among many Star Trek actors, none seem to experience as much criticism as Sonequa Martin-Green does. This is largely because her show, Discovery, debuted in an era dominated by social media and the internet. It’s intriguing to speculate whether characters like Ethan Phillips’ Neelix or Wil Wheaton’s Wesley Crusher would have faced more backlash if their shows had aired during the peak of the social media era.
The Discovery crew is consistently dedicated, persistently working, and stayed committed throughout the entire production of the series. Unlike many other shows, the cast remained relatively stable, with most original members sticking around unless their characters met an untimely demise or ventured off on new journeys. From all accounts, they functioned as a close-knit unit, much like Star Trek, experiencing disagreements but ultimately uniting to appreciate their shared passions. In essence, they resemble any family, bonding over the aspects that bring them joy.
