Star Trek: Discovery and Star Trek: Lower Decks nominated for Saturn Awards

As a lifelong Trekkie who has followed the franchise through its highs and lows, I find myself a bit disappointed with this year’s Saturn Awards nominations. Star Trek: Discovery and Star Trek: Lower Decks are the only representatives from our beloved universe, which feels like a stark contrast to last year’s fifteen nominations. It seems that the Star Trek universe is experiencing a bit of a dry spell in terms of recognition, with Strange New Worlds and Prodigy both missing out this time around.

For this year’s Saturn Awards, the contenders have been revealed, with Star Trek: Discovery and Star Trek: Lower Decks being the only Star Trek shows up for grabs. Specifically, Discovery is nominated in the category of Best Science Fiction Television Series for its final season, while Lower Decks has also been recognized for its final season in the Best Animated Television series category.

Discovery is currently battling against “3-Body Problem”, “Ahsoka”, “The Ark”, “Dark Matter”, and “Fallout” in the category of Best Science Fiction Television Series this year, while Lower Decks is up against tough opponents such as “Batman: Caped Crusader”, “Gremlins: The Wild Batch”, “Kaiju No. 8”, “Star Wars: The Bad Batch”, and “X-Men ’97”. Last year, the award for Best Science Fiction Television Series went to Lower Decks’ competitor, “The Bad Batch”, while Discovery was not nominated at all. In its third and final season, “Star Trek: Picard” took home the award last year.

The Saturn Awards has seen a decrease in nominations this year, making it the least number of nominations for the franchise since Star Trek: Discovery debuted in 2017. In contrast, last year the franchise garnered fifteen nominations, with Picard taking home four awards and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds receiving one.

2024 saw no new episodes of Strange New Worlds, leading to it being snubbed for nominations this year. In contrast, last year it earned six nominations and even won one. With season three set to air next year, there’s a high chance it will return to the limelight. To date, Star Trek: Prodigy is the only series in the rebooted franchise that hasn’t been nominated for a Saturn Award.

On Sunday, February 2, 2025, the 52nd Annual Saturn Awards will take place live from Universal City, California. For the first time ever, you can watch it on ElectricNow.TV and The Roku Channel exclusively!
