Star Trek: Deep Space Nine – Malissa Longo Criticizes Nog’s Canon Rank In Starfleet Academy

Malissa Longo, the wife of the late Aron Eisenberg (who played Nog on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine), has publicly disagreed with a detail presented in Star Trek: Starfleet Academy. She believes the rank given to Nog in the show is inaccurate. In the 33rd century, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy features a ‘Wall of Heroes’ honoring figures from Star Trek history – both fictional characters like Nog and the real-life people who helped create the show.

Despite his potential, Nog is only shown with the rank of Lieutenant, the same position he held at the end of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. Considering his promising future and a vision of him as a Captain in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, it feels inaccurate that the series establishes he never achieved a higher rank.

The Star Trek and Chill podcast from Virtual Trek Con discussed a ScreenRant article titled Star Trek’s Legacy Wall: The 10 Most Shocking Reveals. The article pointed out that Lt. Nog was included on the Wall of Heroes in Star Trek: Starfleet Academy. While Malissa Longo enjoys Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, she disagreed with Nog’s final rank being listed as Lieutenant. I completely disagree – this is a major problem for me. We already saw Nog promoted to Captain on Deep Space Nine…

We saw him as a captain twice – once in Deep Space Nine and again in the documentary, What We Left Behind – specifically while he was commanding the Defiant. It’s also established that Nog eventually became a captain, so it makes sense he would have achieved that rank. We’re big fans of Captain Nog!

You know, I always loved that he didn’t die in the Dominion War. Losing a leg… that’s what made him a hero, honestly. It was his bravery and what he did that earned him that status. But what really got me was seeing him rebuild after the Siege of AR-558. He didn’t just survive, he learned from it, and I truly believe that experience shaped him into the Captain we all know and admire.

In the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine episode “The Visitor,” Malissa revealed that Nog became a Starfleet Captain in a possible future. Later, the writers of DS9, led by Ira Steven Behr, imagined a continuation of the series where Nog commanded the USS Defiant in the first episode of a hypothetical eighth season, as explored in the documentary What We Left Behind.

Nog was a fan favorite on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, and a perfect example of the show’s knack for making supporting characters as popular as the main cast. He wasn’t just the first Ferengi in Starfleet; he was a well-regarded Ensign who bravely lost his leg during the Dominion War.

Nog earned the rank of Lieutenant by the end of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, and it’s surprising he didn’t achieve a higher rank within the Star Trek universe. He was a very driven and capable Ferengi, and Star Trek: Starfleet Academy‘s Wall of Heroes confirms his potential. With the support and guidance of Captain Benjamin Sisko, many believed Nog was destined to become a captain himself.

Star Trek: Discovery honored Nog by naming a starship, the USS Nog, after the character and actor Aron Eisenberg. However, this makes the portrayal of Nog as a Lieutenant in Star Trek: Starfleet Academy even more puzzling. It seems unlikely Starfleet would name a vessel after someone holding such a low rank, even considering he was the first Ferengi in the organization.

Malissa Longo, who is an artist, actress, and businesswoman, married Aron Eisenberg in 2018 after meeting him in 2013. Sadly, Aron passed away in September 2019. Malissa understands Aron’s feelings about Star Trek very well. She’s certain he would have enjoyed Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, but she also thinks he would have been frustrated that his character, Nog, never achieved the rank of Lieutenant, calling it “totally unfair.”
