Star Trek: Deep Space Nine helped inspire the new live-action Star Trek comedy
As a die-hard Star Trek enthusiast who has spent countless hours binge-watching every series from TOS to Discovery, I must admit that the prospect of a live-action comedy series set in the Star Trek universe initially filled me with trepidation. However, after learning more about the project and its roots in the beloved “bottle” episodes of DS9, my excitement has been rekindled.
At San Diego Comic Con, it was revealed that Tawny Newsome and Justin Simien are working on a brand-new live-action comedy series set within the Star Trek universe. Although Star Trek has had its share of comedic scenes across all the shows, some fans are hesitant about an entire live-action comedy series. The concept is being described as a “workplace comedy reminiscent of The Office and Parks and Recreation.” Given that these two series still have a large number of devoted followers, this could potentially be good news for the new comedy.
During an interview with TVLine at San Diego Comic-Con, Simien revealed that the idea for the show originated from his and Newsome’s shared fondness for “bottle” episodes on Star Trek, which are shows filmed primarily on one set to reduce costs. He specifically acknowledged Star Trek: Deep Space Nine as a significant influence behind this concept. Essentially, the show seems to revolve around a daily life comedy, offering more than just brief scenes featuring characters like Quark; instead, we’ll get a full twenty-two minutes (or however long each episode will be) of this type of storytelling.
“I think DS9 is a big, big inspiration. But also… those episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation where it wasn’t plot heavy. Where it was more like you were with a character for a day, and you got to see their perspective on a bigger thing. Those were always my favorite episodes and so we just decided to make a show that was made out of our favorite parts.”
As per Simien and Newsome’s reports, the upcoming series is expected to be established in the 25th century, hinting that it might take place on the planet Risa.
Federation outsiders serving a gleaming resort planet find out their day-to-day exploits are being broadcast to the entire quadrant.
Despite some lingering doubts from fans about the new series, the recent revelations suggest that it could indeed prove to be a success. The Star Trek series boasts several moments that are downright hilarious, particularly those featuring Worf [Michael Dorn] and Dr. Phlox [John Billingsley]. If the show focuses on this style of humor, it may just strike the right chord!
