Star Trek Day needs to be the yearly centerpiece of the franchise

As a lifelong Star Trek enthusiast who’s spent countless hours navigating the final frontier from the comfort of my living room, I can’t help but feel a tad disappointed with the lackluster celebrations for this beloved franchise on Star Trek Day.

Each year, Star Trek Day is meant to be a significant occasion for the franchise. This day, September 8th, marks the anniversary of the franchise‘s inception, looking back to the premiere of the original series in 1966. Over the years, the franchise has expanded and evolved, giving birth to numerous spin-off shows and even some movie franchises along the way.

Yet, when the decision to start celebrating the birth of the franchise in 2019, the “holiday” has really only been such in name only. Very rarely has the actual events of Star Trek Day, or even First Contact Day, been worth talking about.

In the previous year, the main attraction during the holiday season was the debut of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds on CBS, along with a special presentation by Jerry O’Connell. Admittedly, this wasn’t a grand event, but the enthusiasm for Star Trek was reminiscent of a sports fanaticism that erupts after winning the league championship.

It doesn’t have to be that way either. You can do a proper Star Trek Day. Considering the franchise spends so much time giving hype to other franchises, like the San Diego Comic-Con, you’d think that Paramount and Star Trek would opt to instead lend themselves to their own created holiday. This is part of the reason why Star Trek Day 2024 will only feature a select amount of free episodes.

This franchise has launched a new charity program titled “Take the Chair, Make a Difference”. Through this initiative, fans are encouraged to give both money and time to aid their local communities. Additionally, the franchise itself will be contributing 25% of its earnings throughout the month to various charities. However, for such a renowned organization, this seems rather underwhelming.

Celebrating Star Trek Day could coincide with an official event, either beginning or concluding on the day that marks the birth of the franchise. At this gathering, a variety of events such as interviews, sneak peeks, and significant updates would take place. This includes but is not limited to appearances from original cast members, new collectible items, trailer releases, and major announcements about upcoming projects.

It should be the day that every Star Trek fan old and young, near and far tune into not just for the celebration of the franchise’s birth but also to engage in the series’ future while respecting the past. Right now it’s little more than a blip on the radar and a cheap ploy to get people to fein interest in not-so-interesting concepts.

But with the right guidance and structure, Star Trek Day could be huge.
