At the 2024 San Diego Comic-Con, a new Star Trek series was announced – a first for the franchise, as it will be a live-action comedy. Writer Tawny Newsome shared that all the scripts are finished, which is encouraging news for fans who have been waiting for an update since the initial announcement in July 2024. While the project is still awaiting final approval before production can begin, the fact that it hasn’t been cancelled is a positive sign. Newsome is working on the series with Justin Simien, creator of Dear White People, and Alex Kurtzman.
Newsome made the update to TrekMovie.com:
People kept telling me, ‘We’re done writing, and it’s great!’ Then we submitted it, and shortly after, it was Christmas. Things are a bit uncertain for the business at the moment, so it’s hard to say what will happen next.
Justin and I are really proud of the scripts we’ve created. We’re excited and just waiting to see if they get picked up. We’re hopeful, but if it doesn’t happen, I’m happy to move on to other projects. We truly believe in the work we’ve done.
Boldly Going Where the Franchise Hasn’t Gone Before

While the Star Wars films are known for being fun and adventurous, Star Trek has generally been seen as a more thoughtful look at space and the unknown, even though it’s had plenty of funny moments over the years. The animated series Star Trek: Lower Decks, with Eugene Newsome, was a full-on comedy. While comedy has always been part of Star Trek, this new series will be the first to make it the main focus.
Although Newsom wished the project was further along, she expressed gratitude for all the feedback she’s received so far.
We were lucky to have fantastic partners at the studio. It’s unusual to receive feedback from studio executives and genuinely feel positive about it, but they offered some truly great ideas. We’re thrilled to be able to use them. They helped us refine the project while still allowing our vision to shine through, which we really appreciate. Now, we’re just hoping everything comes together as it should.
Newsome first appeared in the Star Trek universe with Lower Decks, and later reprised her role in live-action on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. A new comedy spin-off featuring her character was announced, and The Hollywood Reporter described it as a show about Federation employees working at a luxurious resort planet, with their daily lives being broadcast across the galaxy. The series is expected to have a similar feel to workplace comedies like The Office and Parks and Recreation.
