Star Trek: Academy was right to add Tig Notaro as a full-time name
As a long-time Star Trek fan, I must say that my initial disappointment with Star Trek: Discovery was palpable. The show seemed to stray far from the path of what made the original series so beloved. Characters were unlikeable, storylines deviated from expectations, and lore changes left many fans scratching their heads.
When Star Trek: Discovery debuted in 2017, it failed to deliver on several fronts for many long-time fans. Instead of staying true to the original Star Trek spirit, the show introduced a string of errors. Unpopular character choices, unexpected storylines that missed the mark, and significant alterations to established lore left fans feeling disconnected from the first new Star Trek series in over a decade.
Despite making some mistakes, Star Trek made an excellent choice in adding Tig Notaro as a recurring character. Her portrayal of Jett Reno, Discovery’s engineer, injected much-needed wit and humor into the series. The writing was subpar, which is common in early Nu Trek productions. Nevertheless, Notaro shone brilliantly among her colleagues.
In spite of appearing in only a few episodes (18), Notaro managed to win over a large number of “Star Trek” fans with her captivating performances. As a result, she has been invited to join the upcoming series as a regular cast member.
At this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, I was thrilled to learn that I’d be stepping back into the boots of Jett Reno for the forthcoming Star Trek: Starfleet Academy series! It’s an incredible honor to reunite with Robert Picardo, who’ll once again bring The Doctor to life from his previous roles on Star Trek: Voyager and Prodigy. We can’t wait to join forces as series regulars for this exciting new venture!
As a longtime fan of this show, I’m thrilled to hear that Notaro and Picardo have been added to the cast. Their announcements come as welcome news, joining the already impressive roster of Holly Hunter, Kerrice Brooks, Bella Shepard, George Hawkins, Karim Diané, Zoë Steiner, Paul Giamatti, and Gina Yashere. It’s a testament to the show’s enduring appeal that it continues to attract such talented actors.
Starfleet Academy has assembled an engaging ensemble of characters, which could attract a wide viewership. Yet, it remains to be seen whether this show will follow the tone of Prodigy and Strange New Worlds or strive to resemble Discovery too closely.
