Star Trek 4 should focus on bringing back characters, not debuting new ones

As a devoted Trekkie with decades of stardate-marked memories etched into my neural pathways, I must confess that the prospect of Star Trek 4 has me both elated and apprehensive. The question of who will grace our screens is indeed a burning one, especially when it comes to familiar faces from recent installments.

Among the many topics concerning Star Trek 4, one of the most intriguing is figuring out who might be part of the cast if the film gets produced. The original surviving main cast would likely appear, provided the movie goes ahead. However, beyond them, there’s a lot of uncertainty. There are numerous characters we’ve encountered in recent years that fans are eager to see reappear in some capacity.

In Star Trek 2009, we have Gaila, followed by Carol Marcus from Star Trek: Into Darkness, and Jaylah in Star Trek: Beyond. Additionally, there are supporting characters like Keenser, characters yet to be confirmed such as George Kirk, and roles played by up-and-coming stars like Navigation Officer Darwin (portrayed by Aisha Hinds).

With such an abundance of characters to choose from, adding a new one solely for the sake of doing so seems unnecessary and even a bit ostentatious. After all, we already have numerous characters who made a single appearance in this film series. Why introduce yet another classic character for no apparent reason?

Specifically, Strange New Worlds has already executed this idea exceptionally well. Each classic character they’ve introduced has enriched the characters’ histories significantly. The portrayals of Uhura and James Kirk, among others, have become more profound due to their presence in Strange New Worlds.

In simpler terms, Nurse Christine Chapel and Doctor M’Benga have done commendable work in their roles. However, if they were included in Star Trek 4, their contributions might not significantly impact the main storyline. Back in 2013, Alice Eve’s portrayal of Carol Marcus was entertaining but lacked depth, as her character didn’t have a lasting impact on the plot.

That was ok in 2013, because what else was there to judge it off of.

Currently, we’ve got Strange New Worlds, setting a fresh benchmark for storytelling. It also offers a unique approach in crafting and developing characters. Merely placing characters into a script is no longer sufficient; we require something more from them. This is particularly crucial when one character serves as an alternative to Pavel Chekov.

Due to the untimely demise of Anton Yelchin nearly a decade back, there remains speculation about the fate of his character, Chekov. Will he be replaced by another actor? Could the character be retired instead? Or will a new character step in to fill his role?

It’s possible that if you forcefully insert a well-known character into their role, underutilize them, and then ignore them afterwards, not only are you disrespecting Yelchin and his influence on the series, but you’re also wasting the opportunity to honor the classic character that was brought in solely for the sake of inclusion.
