Star-studded psychological “vengeance” thriller inspired by a ’90s remake gets first-look teaser

A new trailer has been released for Cape Fear, Apple TV+’s reimagining of the classic thriller directed by Martin Scorsese.

The new 10-episode series, starring Amy Adams, Patrick Wilson, and Javier Bardem, will premiere on June 5th. It’s based on John D. MacDonald’s 1957 novel, The Executioners.

Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg, both of whom worked on the original 1991 film with Robert De Niro, Jessica Lange, Juliette Lewis, and Nick Nolte, are now executive producers on the remake. Nick Antosca, known for his work on TV shows like Channel Zero and Brand New Cherry Flavour, is leading the project as showrunner.

Apple describes the movie as a thriller where a happily married couple, lawyers Anna (Amy Adams) and Tom Bowden (Patrick Wilson), find their lives threatened when Max Cady (Javier Bardem), a dangerous criminal they helped convict, is released from prison seeking revenge. It’s based on the 1991 Martin Scorsese film, which was produced by Steven Spielberg.

The film’s cast includes Joe Anders, CCH Pounder, Lily Collias, Jamie Hector, Malia Pyles, Anna Baryshnikov, as well as stars Adams, Wilson, and Bardem.

After launching with two episodes on June 5th, Apple has announced that the final eight episodes will be released weekly on Fridays, concluding on July 31st.

Before the show comes out, Wilson explained it’s not a remake of the ’90s movie, but rather a continuation. Apple’s version will expand the story by introducing new characters and making some changes (according to Screen Rant). Wilson also described the series as being completely different, while still maintaining the core elements of the original.

Apple TV’s take on Cape Fear isn’t the first big adaptation of the story. Martin Scorsese’s 1991 version was a critical and commercial hit, earning Golden Globe and Oscar nominations. Even 35 years later, it’s still considered a cult classic and maintains a 77% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Before Martin Scorsese’s version – which was also a remake – director J Lee Thompson made a film with the same title in 1962, featuring Gregory Peck, Robert Mitchum, and Polly Bergen. That film was also well-received by critics and currently holds an 88% fresh rating.

Cape Fear will debut on Apple TV on 5 June.
