A highly praised new historical drama has arrived on Netflix, with many describing it as realistic and exceptional.

Featuring Lena Headey and Gillian Anderson, The Abandons is a story about two mothers caught in a violent rivalry in the Washington Territory of 1854.

The show centers on the powerful women at the heads of two contrasting families: the Van Nesses, a wealthy and privileged dynasty led by Constance, and the Abandons, a close-knit group of orphans and outsiders fiercely guarded by Fiona Nolan.

While it includes classic western elements like saloons and ranch life, it’s the characters and their relationships that truly drive the story.

The series is visually impressive, with large-scale action, a significant budget, and a committed cast. The production quality across all seven episodes is truly excellent. However, the main storyline doesn’t quite measure up. Launching a western series today inevitably draws comparisons to hits like Yellowstone, Landman, and 1923. Honestly, I doubt many people will remember this series after watching those others.

The version of The Abandons that viewers will ultimately see is far from the creators’ original vision, and unfortunately, the show doesn’t even offer a proper ending. Despite finding it watchable, even during sad moments, the seven episodes and their unresolved cliffhanger aren’t strong enough to justify continuing with a series that clearly feels unfinished and has lost the spark that drove it initially.
