Star of popular BBC crime series compared to Inspector Morse confirms exit ahead of new season

Gerran Howell, known for his role in Ludwig, has announced he’s leaving the popular comedy-drama. In an interview with Radio Times, Howell—who currently plays Dr. Dennis Whitaker on The Pitt—confirmed he won’t be appearing in future episodes of Ludwig.

“No, I’m afraid not,” he said. “I’m hoping it’s still on, though—I really enjoy that show.”

Howell played Detective Chief Inspector Simon Evans in the BBC series, appearing alongside David Mitchell, who led the cast. After the first season launched in 2024, the show was well-received, and many viewers on IMDb drew comparisons to the classic detective series, Inspector Morse.

The BBC announced in September that filming for the second season of Ludwig had begun, confirming the show’s renewal.

The new series begins right after the first one ended, with puzzle expert John ‘Ludwig’ Taylor (played by David Mitchell) now assisting the Cambridge Police with particularly baffling crimes as a Crime Scene Consultant.

What to Read Next

Now that he doesn’t have to pretend to be someone else, John is truly himself – a genius at puzzles but struggling with everyday tasks. However, his twin brother, James, remains missing. Because John now works for the police station, he’s not allowed to use any police resources to find James or investigate what James was working on before he disappeared.

John is determined to keep searching, and so is Lucy, who is married to John’s missing brother, James. She’s desperate to find out what happened to him and bring him home to his family. While one disguise or deception has been revealed, another is just starting to unfold.

Although Julian Howell won’t be back, many of his former co-stars will be returning for the second season. Joining David Mitchell and Anna Maxwell Martin are Dipo Ola, Dylan Hughes, Dorothy Atkinson, Ralph Ineson, and Karl Pilkington.

The BBC announced several new actors joining the cast. Mark Bonnar will play Gareth Fisher, a newspaper editor, and Sian Clifford will portray Joanne Kemper, a local Member of Parliament. Ben Ashenden and Rumi Sutton will also star as detectives Ethan Cole and Caitlin Sullivan, respectively.

We don’t know yet when season two of Ludwig will be available, but you can watch season one right now on BBC iPlayer.
