Stanley Tucci teases his “complicated” character in Netflix’s The Electric State

As a long-time fan of Stanley Tucci’s mesmerizing performances and intriguing roles, I am beyond thrilled about his latest project, “The Electric State” on Netflix. Having witnessed his transformative portrayal in films such as “The Hunger Games,” I can confidently say that he is a master at bringing depth to characters in epic blockbusters that delve into relevant societal themes.

Stanley Tucci isn’t new to large-scale movies tackling contemporary topics, like “The Hunger Games,” and it seems that “The Electric State” on Netflix will fall into the same category.

Under the guidance of directors Joe and Anthony Russo, the upcoming sci-fi film serves as a screen translation of Simon Stålenhag’s namesake graphic novel. The narrative unfolds in an alternative 1990s, post a conflict between mankind and the robots they themselves constructed.

In the movie, Stanley Tucci portrays Ethan Skate, a significant tech figure navigating the tense truce that’s ensued. Similar to other characters in the film, Ethan Skate is not modeled after an existing character from the original narrative.

In an exclusive interview with Digital Spy after the The Electric State panel at MCM Comic Con last Saturday (October 26), Tucci shared that it wasn’t only the script that drew him to the film, but also real-world personalities.

“Over the decades we’ve seen these guys pop up and some of them have lasted and have had a very positive impact. I mean Steve Jobs being one of them,” he explained.

It’s astounding how the idea of owning a personal computer has evolved over time, becoming increasingly compact until it’s essentially what we carry in our pockets today – our smartphones. They have replaced the need for larger devices to perform various tasks.

“I had everything outlined in the script, but as we’re working on it, you’re making changes. Are we supposed to follow these script changes, or should we improvise instead?

In simpler terms, Joe Russo likened Ethan Skate to the innovative figure Charles Foster Kane, suggesting a similar impact on their respective domains.

This individual is known for creating inventions, often spurred by personal tragedy. As a result, he’s a complex figure since he’s grappling with significant emotional problems while also tackling crucial inventive challenges.

However, when your idea is encased within commercial interests and economic factors, and when costs associated with maintaining the technology come into play, there’s a risk that it may deviate from its original intent, potentially heading towards less desirable outcomes or even darker paths.

Tucci stated, “Forcing your solution on others is similar to someone saying, ‘I have a troubled stomach,’ and then another person suggesting, ‘Why don’t you try this?’ It might help, but it’s not necessarily the same problem.

Russo additionally discussed with Digital Spy the alterations implemented when transitioning the graphic novel into a screenplay.

The Electric State is released on Netflix on March 14, 2025.
