Stacey Solomon says she would ‘completely black out’ on X Factor due to ‘trauma and anxiety’ and will never sing live again

Stacey Solomon revealed she would often become overwhelmed and mentally shut down during her time on The X Factor, explaining it was due to the stress and anxiety she experienced during the competition. She shared this information on Wednesday.

The 36-year-old TV star first became well-known on an ITV show in 2009. Although she began her career as a singer, she’s now explained why she’s decided to stop performing.

Since appearing on X Factor, she’s become a popular face on television, successfully transitioning into a TV presenter and gaining a large following as a DIY expert.

Stacey told BBC Radio 2’s Scott Mills that she used to be really scared before going on stage.

Scott asked: ‘Would you ever perform professionally again?’

Stacey said, ‘Absolutely not. I used to get incredibly anxious every Saturday night—my mouth would become completely dry.’

Just thinking about it gives me goosebumps. I’d get so nervous my mouth would become incredibly dry and my lips would tremble.

‘I can honestly say, I don’t know if it was trauma or what, but I don’t remember the performances.

I used to get so nervous performing that I’d completely zone out, walk off stage, and not even recall what had just happened. It was a really unpleasant experience, and I don’t plan on repeating it.

You know, when I made the decision to step away from singing, it really made me think about the advice my dad always gave me. He used to tell me to say ‘yes’ to opportunities, to work incredibly hard at anything I loved, and to just keep going. That ‘yes’ mentality, and that drive, has honestly shaped so much of my life. I’ve always tried to live by it, and it’s something I encourage everyone to do – embrace chances and pursue what you’re passionate about with everything you’ve got!

When someone offers me a chance – and I’m grateful for every opportunity I’ve received – my immediate reaction is to embrace it and give it my all.

Stacey came in third place on The X Factor and then shifted her focus to television. In 2010, she won the reality show, I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here!

She quickly became well-known on television, appearing on popular shows like Celebrity Juice, A League Of Their Own, and Through The Keyhole.

She secured one of her biggest gigs to date when she became a panellist on Loose Women in 2016.

The actress also started gaining followers on social media, becoming popular for her clever cleaning tips and do-it-yourself projects.

Thanks to her many followers, Stacey Solomon published her book, Tap to Tidy, about organizing and finding joy in everyday life in 2021, and also began hosting the BBC show Sort Your Life Out.

Stacey recently appeared as a guest judge on one episode of Britain’s Got Talent, joining Amanda Holden, Alesha Dixon, and YouTube star KSI on the judging panel.

She filled in for Simon Cowell, becoming the head judge alongside Amanda, 55, on the ITV show.

Everyone involved with the show – the judges and hosts – were delighted to have her join, describing her as friendly, humorous, and genuine.

When asked about Stacey joining the show, Alesha, 47, described her as ‘adorable,’ adding that she’s genuinely kind and very down-to-earth. Alesha also appreciated how Stacey offered feedback to the contestants, noting that her advice always came from a sincere and positive place.

You know, I’ve always admired Stacey. She’s genuinely kind and thoughtful, the type of person who truly cares. And if something wasn’t quite right for her, she wasn’t afraid to speak up – but she always did it with such grace and a natural charm. It’s a lovely quality, really.

Because she’s been a performer herself, she really understood what the auditionees were going through. I thought she handled it wonderfully!

Ant, age 50, added, ‘Stacey understands firsthand what it’s like to audition and be judged on a show like this.’

She enjoyed sitting as the judge, imagining what it was like to be each person auditioning. She felt a strong connection with and understanding of their experiences.

Declan Donnelly, 50, also praised her, saying she was a valuable addition to the judging panel. He noted she offered thoughtful and helpful feedback, and overall did a great job.

Amanda shared that she finds the new judge wonderful, noting they seem to have a very similar approach to evaluating contestants. She described the judge as warm, hilarious, and uniquely understanding of the audition experience, likely because she herself auditioned for The X Factor.

Despite her current success, she remains humble and approachable, which made her a great fit for the day she joined us. Everyone here admires her.
