St. Denis Medical Stars Reveal: Renewed But Finale Chaos Awaits!
We’ve now entered the spring season of the 2025 TV schedule, a time when fans eagerly anticipate the future of their beloved network shows. However, for NBC’s St. Denis Medical, renewal happened back in January, so there’s no such tension here. The Season 1 finale is scheduled for April 29, and I had a chance to speak with the cast about the comfort they feel knowing that more episodes will follow, regardless of how this spring’s final episode concludes.
Six episodes had been broadcast when St. Denis Medical secured its early renewal in January, not too long after the sitcom received a couple of nominations for Critics Choice Awards. To this day, it’s one of the few shows that NBC has renewed from the 2024-2025 television schedule they have announced so far.
In my conversation with the stars prior to the Season 1 finale, I was curious about their feelings regarding the early renewal. During their joint interview, Wendi McLendon-Covey, famously known from The Goldbergs, shared her thoughts:
Man, it was amazing! It really was. We wrapped up filming in September and didn’t debut until November, so we were just on edge thinking, ‘I hope the audience enjoys this.’ But the reaction turned out to be massive. Not only did we secure an early renewal, but we also received a Critics Choice nomination after just four episodes. [laughs] Even Sir Grier got his own nod, which was quite something, don’t you think, David?
In the realm of television accolades, I found myself blessedly nominated for two Critics Choice Awards during our inaugural season. The categories were nothing short of extraordinary – Best Comedy Series and Best Actor in a Comedy Series, an honor bestowed upon me alongside my esteemed co-star David Alan Grier. You may recall his remarkable performance as a morbid funeral director in “Elsbeth” this spring.
When I heard the news about my nomination, one of my colleagues exclaimed it was “incredible.” With a twinkle in my eye, I playfully replied, “Yes, for some,” but then shared heartfelt sentiments: “For me, it’s an affirmation that our hard work is being recognized and appreciated. I am deeply grateful to the critics and the audience who have embraced our show.
It was fantastic! It was pleasant. It undeniably boosted our confidence. We have the opportunity for more performances, and I’m excitedly looking forward to resuming soon.
In the penultimate episode of Season 1, Ron and Joyce were teamed up for an entertaining subplot where their witty banter turned out to generate a substantial donation for the hospital. While Josh Lawson’s extravagant dance performance as Dr. Bruce stole the spotlight, the scenes featuring Ron and Joyce showcased their chemistry brilliantly.
Additionally, I converse with Allison Tolman and Kahyun Kim, whose on-screen characters experienced some intriguing plotlines in the penultimate episode of the season. (You can watch it now with a Peacock subscription.) Alex, portrayed by Tolman, grappled with her husband over whether to have a third child, a dilemma that promises resolution in the finale. As a former cast member of Fargo, she revealed that they filmed the finale before many other episodes, hinting at its conclusion being decided prior to learning about the series renewal.
Previously, we had recorded that scene. However, at the time, we were unaware of certain details. Our filming was complete, but there was uncertainty about our return to the show. We held on to hope and faith. We filmed the final episode, as well as some extra episodes prior to it. Contrary to what you might think, the finale wasn’t the last thing we shot. Instead, we filmed a bit beyond it, creating a slight jumble in the sequence of events. Essentially, you’re getting pieces presented out of order.
As a movie critic, I found myself captivated by Kahyun Kim’s portrayal of Serena in St. Denis Medical. Her enigmatic dynamic with Matt (Mekki Leeper) leaves us wondering if they will ever truly connect, a question that hangs heavy as we approach the series finale. Despite the uncertainty, Kim’s hopeful remarks about the potential renewal resonate deeply with me and her fellow cast members. She candidly admitted:
“I can only speculate about Serena’s future, but I certainly hope she finds herself on the same page someday.
As a film enthusiast, let me tell you, that experience was absolutely delightful! To put it mildly, I’d venture to say it ranked among the most joyous moments in cinema history. I have this feeling it will only get more exhilarating as time goes by. However, when folks ask if I was taken aback, I just can’t help but chuckle and say, “Not at all!” You see, the show is so exceptionally crafted that I had a hunch about its success. With our collective eyes glued to the screen, it was hard not to predict greatness. But in this business, it’s always refreshing to have my instincts validated.
Certainly, the actors aren’t the only ones feeling relieved about securing another season with several months remaining before the final episode. Co-creator and co-showrunner Eric Ledgin, who has previously worked on shows like Superstore and American Auto for NBC prior to St. Denis, expressed his relief as well:
On a personal level, it’s monumental – I feel deeply grateful and confident about my future plans for the next year, knowing I can continue working with the fantastic individuals I currently collaborate with. Moreover, the certainty that our project will move forward, transforming from ‘if we get another season’ to ‘this is happening,’ ignites a sense of urgency and inspiration. It fuels late-night brainstorming sessions, resulting in fresh ideas that will ultimately enhance the show’s quality in the long run.
As a movie enthusiast, I’ve hinted that turmoil is brewing in St. Denis before Season 1 wraps up. NBC’s sneak peek into the finale suggests a tempest will stir up pandemonium within the Emergency Department. The situation seems to put Alex in a tough spot, as she’s pulled between her duty to her spouse and the demands of her colleagues. Meanwhile, it appears Joyce is splurging, possibly thanks to the cash she might have acquired with Dr. Ron at the end of the previous episode.
