Squid Game: Unleashed Review: Similar to Fall Guys yet much different
A Review of Squid Game Unleashed, the Exciting Multiplayer Action Battle Royale Experience
In this article, I’m going to discuss my thoughts on Squid Game Unleashed, a thrilling multiplayer game brought to you by none other than Netflix, Inc and developed by their very own studio – Boss Fight. This unique title allows players to partake in more than 40 distinctive and dangerous mini-games, many of which are reminiscent of the beloved series, such as Red Light, Green Light, Dalgona, Squid Game, and so on, while also introducing new games inspired by classic childhood activities.
What sets Squid Game Unleashed apart is that it offers these games for free for a limited time to everyone, giving you the opportunity to immerse yourself in the world of the popular series like never before. In this review, I’ll be sharing my impressions based on the series and offering an honest opinion about the game.
In this critique, I delved into Squid Game: Unleashed on Motorola G32 (Android), spending a total of 15 hours immersed in gameplay. This extended playtime gave me the chance to thoroughly traverse and enjoy all that the game has to offer, setting a strong basis for an in-depth evaluation.
Challenging yet enjoyable gameplay, albeit quite similar to Fall Guys
To begin, let’s delve into the gameplay of Squid Game: Unleashed, having said that, the initial few matches might seem like playing against automated opponents. However, the level of difficulty escalates promptly. As the minigames become more complex and you encounter skilled players, the excitement builds up swiftly, although the violence and gore are somewhat reduced compared to the original series.
The gameplay is reminiscent of Fall Guys, but with a darker, more ominous spin. Unlike the cute and jovial Fall Guys, this game delves into grisly scenes and disturbing motifs to remain faithful to its genre. It’s essentially a party-style game where you can battle it out against 31 opponents in three grueling minigames, with the ultimate goal of winning the match and amassing a significant fortune in virtual currency.
In my perspective as a dedicated fan, while this game manages to encompass numerous elements from the original series, it misses the mark in several instances. For one, I’ve noticed an anomaly in the Glass Bridge minigame – you can respawn after falling to your doom and carry on with the race. However, in the actual series, that’s not how it works.
To put it simply, I’m not implying the gameplay was subpar, quite the contrary – I found it enjoyable. The array of mini-games is commendable, and if I’m being truthful, I’ve lost more matches than I care to admit. This game seems tougher compared to Fall Guys, or perhaps I’m just off my game lately. A unique aspect of this game is that you can employ skills to gain an edge or hinder your opponents.
Regardless, you’ll have a blast playing several classic games from the series, with some featuring unique twists, as well as fresh titles inspired by our cherished childhood pastimes. While the replay value isn’t perfect yet, it has potential for improvement. This game is ideal for fans of Squid Game and Fall Guys.
The lack of a storyline and narrative reduces the game’s impact and immersiveness
As a dedicated fan, I must say that while each character in this game has their own detailed backstory, or “dossiers,” as they’re called, what I find disappointing is the lack of narrative or story-driven content. This seems to be a missed opportunity, given how immersive and captivating the original series’ story was, which undeniably contributed to its incredible popularity.
While the actual gameplay is engaging, there’s room for improvement by focusing on richer storytelling or additional content to deepen the user experience and foster a stronger connection with the game. As currently designed, it’s an adaptation of Squid Game, but not the captivating version that fans have grown to love.
Unfortunately, optimization issues can hinder your chances of survival in the game
A significant issue with this game lies in its suboptimal performance. Despite appearing lightweight on paper, it struggles even on lower-end devices that can handle high-end games at low frames per second (FPS). The developers need to address this concern, given the widespread popularity of Squid Game, and not everyone possesses a high-end device. Even users with mid-range devices have reported problems playing the game, which is unexpected. This is especially disheartening, considering its association with such a well-known franchise.
Good visuals paired with audio that matches the game’s vibe
This game boasts decent graphics, though it may not be top-tier. It gets the job done satisfactorily, but its visual appeal isn’t as striking as that of Fall Guys. However, Squid Game: Unleashed does a commendable job in incorporating the show’s gritty elements into its cartoonish style, particularly during elimination scenes. Given the massive popularity of the series, one might expect the graphics and character designs to be even more refined and visually striking.
Instead, let me say this: In contrast, the soundtrack and audio effects are truly outstanding. From the pre-match commentary to the realistic gunshots, each element immerses you perfectly into the atmosphere of the game. The developers have undoubtedly put a lot of effort into the audio production.
Squid Game: Unleashed offers smooth and simple UI, along with decent controls
In terms of its user interface and controls, the game offers an intuitive and uncomplicated design that significantly improves your gaming experience. Although the appearance may seem a bit outdated, it is remarkably easy to grasp with minimal distractions and well-organized elements. The generous icon sizes and readable fonts contribute greatly to its practicality.
Despite having straightforward and just two primary buttons for operation, an additional button becomes accessible when using abilities or selecting weapons. In most cases, the controls work well; however, there may be occasional rough patches during gameplay that I’ve noticed personally. Nevertheless, you should encounter few problems in your matches due to these minor, insignificant issues.
The game fails to match the show’s thrill and hype
I appreciate the game’s gameplay, graphics, characters, and overall features, but I don’t consider it an authentic adaptation of Squid Game. Although it’s wonderful that developers aim to appeal to both those who have seen the show and newcomers, I believe a different approach could have been taken.
The game version of Netflix’s most popular series to date isn’t quite capturing the horror, eeriness, and dystopian atmosphere of the original. Instead, it seems closer to a Fall Guys-style game with Squid Game themes, rather than a faithful adaptation of the series itself.
An alternative approach for enhancing fan engagement could be to incorporate a supplementary interactive mode within the game, allowing fans a deeper connection with the series. With its existing potential, if they capitalize on the popularity of their gripping and engaging storyline, they can significantly boost user experience and authenticity.
Instead, they could incorporate additional aspects from the series into the gameplay, introducing a “permanent elimination” feature in games similar to “Red Light, Green Light“. This would boost the excitement and increase the risk, bringing the gameplay closer to the show’s central theme. The appeal of Squid Game lies in its compelling narrative, intense ambiance, and the high-stakes elimination that occurs when players fail during games. Unfortunately, this level of tension or high-risk situations is absent from this particular game.
You don’t need IAPs to survive in the field
In this game, you won’t find any in-app purchases because it’s entirely free. The only cost you’ll have is your Netflix subscription. The in-game store provides a range of items such as Character Tokens, Outfits, and Emotes, which come in different rarities.
One great feature about this game is that you can acquire all its internal goods using Game Currency, which you accumulate through gameplay. However, it’s worth noting that obtaining certain items may require significant playtime due to their high currency costs.
Final Verdict
Title Game: Unleashed is a great game, though it could use some refinements from the developers. It boasts exciting features such as character customization, 32-player competitions, spectator mode, virtual winnings, and much more. Despite experiencing network problems, I found myself enjoying the game, particularly if you’re a fan of Fall Guys. If you appreciate that style of play, this game is sure to provide you with plenty of fun as well!
Despite its playful graphics, this version maintains the excitement and terror of the original show, but it may not be considered an exceptional adaptation. Sadly, the game’s performance is suboptimal, and while it doesn’t seem to demand high system resources, it struggles on less powerful devices. This can be disappointing. Still, I encourage you to give it a try and make up your own mind about the game.
