As a gamer who’s been through countless virtual battles and real-life sleepless nights, I can tell you that the wait for Squid Game season 2 has felt like an eternal round of Red Light, Green Light! But finally, it seems our patience has paid off, with the series set to return on December 26.

It’s been three years. Do you want to play again?

After a long wait of over three years, one of Netflix’s most popular series, “Squid Game,” is set to make its comeback towards the end of this year. The streaming platform has confirmed that season 2 of “Squid Game” will debut on December 26, and there are plans for a third and concluding season, which is anticipated in 2025.

Apart from issuing a press statement, Netflix also released a letter penned by the series creator, screenwriter, and producer Hwang Dong-hyuk. In this correspondence, he hints at future developments in the show as protagonist Seong Gi-hun is lured into participating in the game once more to take on the antagonistic Front Man character.

The fierce clash between their two worlds will continue into the series finale with Season 3, which will be brought to you next year.

Three years following Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae), or Player 456, triumphing over the game, season 2 finds Gi-hun on a mission to locate the individuals responsible for Squid Game, with the aim of eradicating the suffering once and for all. However, as fate would have it, Gi-hun’s quest leads him straight into the core of the organization, leaving his only viable option being to play the game again in order to dismantle it completely.

Here’s the official synopsis for season 2, shared by Netflix:

“Three years following his Squid Game victory, Player 456 continues to relentlessly pursue those responsible for orchestrating the gruesome competition. With his newfound wealth, Gi-hun begins his quest by investigating the man in a sharp suit playing ddakji in the subway, hoping this would lead him to the masterminds. However, uncovering the organization proves more dangerous than anticipated: if he wishes to dismantle it, he must risk re-entering the deadly game itself.”

In advance of Season 2, the streamer unveiled a teaser video previewing a potential new game, accompanied by a date announcement. The clip features a group of individuals racing along a track, with some falling down and appearing to be unconscious or deceased as they run. Towards the end, the video hints at the upcoming final trailer, then offers a sneak peek of Young-hee, also known as The Doll, from the Red Light, Green Light game in Season 1, implying she will reappear in the next season.

At the 74th Emmy Awards, Squid Game broke new ground by having Hwang Dong-hyuk become the first Asian to win the award for Outstanding Director in a Drama Series. In the upcoming second season, he will be back as director, writer, and producer. The initial season of the show earned an impressive 14 Emmy nominations, with Lee Jung-jae also taking home an Emmy for his exceptional performance as Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series.

In the upcoming season, Jung-jae (Lee Byung-hun), previously known as the “Front Man,” along with Wi Ha-jun and Gong Yoo’s character from last season will return to their roles. For clarity, let me add that it seems Hwang Jun-ho, played by Wi Ha-jun, survived being shot. The salesman, portrayed by Gong Yoo, is also back.

The following actors and actresses will be added to the cast: Yim Si-wan, Kang Ha-neul, Park Gyu-young, Lee Jin-uk, Park Sung-hoon, Yang Dong-geun, Kang Ae-sim, Lee David, Choi Seung-hyun, Roh Jae-won, Jo Yu-ri, and Won Ji-an.

Squid Game season 2 premieres on Netflix on December 26.
