Squid Game Creator Reveals Why He Included a Transgender Character in Season 3

Has gained recognition for creating stories centered on societal outcasts, using thrilling fiction to bring their narratives to life. As we eagerly await the release of Squid Game Season 3, the creator is discussing the representation of underrepresented groups within the games and the reasons behind this choice.

It mattered significantly to him that Cho Hyun-ju (Park Sung-hoon) was included. He clarified, “In the first season, you’ll observe that I have a variety of characters that symbolize numerous minority groups present in today’s society. This is because I feel they experience the most hardship and suffering in the current capitalist system.” He continued by stating, “As such, in the first season, there were characters who were foreigners working in Korea, a North Korean defector woman, as well as elderly competitors. In the second season, I wanted to include a character that would represent another minority group, one that is among the most excluded, pressured, and oppressed in our current society.” He then emphasized, “And I believe that this character will be particularly .

In the East, Hwang clarified a significant prejudice towards the LGBTQ+ community. Interestingly, when creating Hyun-ju, he based his work on a true story he’d heard. A Korean soldier underwent gender confirmation surgery during their service, but was subsequently dismissed due to this reason. Tragically, this led to that individual taking their own life.

He found it essential to create a character who could significantly aid in reducing and ultimately breaking free from the biases prevalent in Korean society. Throughout the series, Hyun-ju emerges as the most optimistic and just character, which was deliberately intended to foster positive change.

There Was Controversy Around Hyun-ju’s Actor

Initially, when Hyun-ju was chosen for the role, some felt displeased because the part was given to a cisgender male instead of a transgender woman, which could be perceived as an act that undermines or misrepresents the authenticity and identity of a transgender actress.

In 2024, Hwang addressed the criticisms with grace, saying, “From the outset when I started developing the character Hyun-ju, I knew discussions like these would surface. During our initial research, I had hoped to cast a transgender actor authentically. However, it was disappointing to find that there are scarcely any openly trans or even openly gay actors in Korea at present, as the LGBTQ community is still largely marginalized and neglected, which is truly saddening.

Spectators are eagerly anticipating that the next character similar to “Hyun-ju” will evoke the same level of sympathy, yet they hope it will be portrayed by an actor who better fits the role.

Squid Game season three will arrive on Netflix June 27, 2025.
