Squid Game creator breaks down season 2’s “biggest difference”

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of experience under my belt, I must admit that the teaser for Squid Game Season 2 has me utterly hooked. The first season was a rollercoaster ride of suspense and survival, but it looks like we’re in for something even more gripping this time around.

In a private conversation with Digital Spy, Squid Game’s creator Hwang Dong-hyuk reveals a fresh perspective for the upcoming second season of the Netflix sensation.

In season two, we encounter Gi-hun following his enlightenment from the events of the previous season.

He returns to the game this time with a more defined purpose of halting such games, which sets this season apart from the last one.

Dong-hyuk continued by explaining, “The heart of the plot will revolve around the conflict between Gi-hun and In-ho (Lee Byung-hun), with In-ho trying to prevent Gi-hun from ending the game. I believe this central storyline will provide an exceptional viewing experience.

In the second-to-last episode, the true mastermind behind the games, known as ‘Front Man’, was exposed as In-ho. This revelation came after he got wounded by his detective brother Hwang Jun-ho (played by Wi Ha-joon). Instead of succumbing to his injuries, In-ho retaliated and shot his sibling, Jun-ho, leaving him critically injured.

Based on Dong-hyuk’s remarks, the comments are made following the release of the season two teaser where Dong-hyun (or Seong Gi-hun) is shown reentering the games with the number 456. In this brief clip, we see Gi-hun trying to guide the fresh, unaware players through their initial game – a version of red light/green light. However, chaos erupts when one player gets shot unexpectedly.

In addition, the trailer hints at Jun-ho’s survival. Joining him in Season 2 is his ruthless sibling.

The news broke out in August 2024 that the third and last season of Squid Game was confirmed to air even before the premiere of its second season.

In the upcoming chapters, Dong-hyuk mentioned that Seong Gi-hun, having sworn revenge after the end of season one, reappears and decides to play the game once more. Will he manage to carry out his revenge? It appears that Front Man won’t make it easy for him this time around.

The intense conflict between their two realms will persist right up until the end of the series in season three, set to air next year.

The anticipated second season of “Squid Game” premieres on Netflix this coming December 26th. Currently, you can already stream seasons 1 and a reality series spin-off titled “Squid Game: The Challenge” on their platform.
