Squid Game 2 reviews: Smash hit Netflix series divides critics who claim latest outing has ‘lost its edge’ and is a ‘thorough letdown’ – after fans slammed the ‘overhyped’ show
As a die-hard fan of the original “Squid Game”, I must admit that my excitement for season 2 was through the roof. Having waited three long years to see our beloved characters continue their journey, I eagerly clicked play, expecting another nail-biting rollercoaster ride. However, what I got was a disappointingly predictable and underwhelming spectacle.
As a lifestyle enthusiast, I’ve eagerly anticipated the return of Squid Game, and it’s finally here! The much-anticipated second series debuted on Netflix this Thursday. Yet, the response from critics has been somewhat split regarding the latest installment of this gripping dystopian drama.
In 2021, the debut of the South Korean series marked the streaming platform’s most-watched program to date, amassing an impressive 1.65 billion total watch hours.
As a lifestyle expert, I would rephrase it this way: I followed the harrowing journey of Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae), alongside other unfortunate individuals, as they were subjected to a series of dangerous children’s games. Tragically, many lost their lives during this ordeal, all in an attempt to claim the massive £24M prize.
In series two, Seong reappears for another round of action, but opinions are divided. Some reviewers say that the show has lost its initial sharpness, while others find it completely captivating.
According to Daniel Feinberg, writing for The Hollywood Reporter, the second season of Squid Game was a significant disappointment.
‘It’s not a fundamental level on which Squid Game is broken, but season two simply doesn’t work’.

In a 3-star review for The Guardian, Rebecca Nicholson expressed disappointment about the show’s rhythm and stated that for the initial three out of seven new episodes, the series seemed unsure of its objective.
Despite some initial inconsistencies and a gradual build-up towards more significant events, this storyline presents a major unexpected turn that effectively keeps audiences engaged. However, it’s debatable how unique this twist is compared to the developments in the initial season.
After you believe you’ve figured out its path, it veers off course, adding more complexity and regaining stability. Unfortunately, it takes quite a while to reach that point. The third season seems to require some tidying up.
In my expert opinion as a lifestyle enthusiast, Collider’s Therese Lacson pointed out that the second season of this series was like a sledgehammer in subtlety. To put it simply, once we step into the arena, the plot twists are so evident that they’re practically visible from a mile away, even with a fresh game. If you manage to miss them, the show makes sure to give you a bright warning signal to ensure you’re ready for the upcoming twist.
The program appears to overexplain things due to a perceived fear that viewers might struggle to follow along.
As the season comes to an end, it seems as though too much time has been devoted to repeating events. This is particularly true because the last episode introduces something new, suggesting that more focus could have been given to this unfamiliar territory instead of other areas.
Simultaneously, Ed Power penned his three-star assessment for The Telegraph: “Squid Game 2 is akin to the challenging second album from an instant pop sensation. It retains much of what made the original Squid Game from 2021 appealing, but seems disinterested in exceeding or even redefining its predecessor.
The ensemble is broadened to include Park Gyu Young portraying a troubled North Korean female character and Park Sung-hoon playing a transgender contestant. However, even with these fresh faces, the show maintains its familiar structure rather than undergoing significant change.

The series only scratches the surface of the Squid Game universe, leaving viewers yearning for more in-depth exploration. Despite its chaos and intense violence, Squid Game 2 seems intent on playing it conservatively instead.
In The Times, Tim Glanfield heaped praises on the series, stating that it exhibited a greater level of complexity and nuance compared to its initial debut.
The secret behind the stunning comeback lies in the meticulous and considerate tempo, along with subtle touches of brightness amidst the dark and grim atmosphere.
The fundamental appeal of the original series persists: people making poor choices, forming tenuous partnerships and fervent friendships, only to witness unexpected reversals in their fortunes.
In The Independent, Annabel Nugent awarded the show four stars and stated: ‘Does Squid Game manage to capture lightning in a bottle twice? To some extent, yes and no. It’s difficult to replicate the initial surprise, and [creator] Hwang Dong Hyuk wisely avoids attempting this.’
In the first season, fear was generated through sudden shocks, each death having a surprising impact, similar to a quick blow to the back of your head. However, in season two, terror is built upon familiarity for returning viewers, placing Gi Hun in the role of our stand-in once more. He understands what’s coming up next, yet despite this knowledge, he remains helpless to prevent it.
Simultaneously, X was inundated with displeased remarks from viewers who lamented, “I didn’t spend three years anticipating this.

Most viewers agreed that it was deemed dull and routine, with many complaining that it failed to deliver the usual edge-of-your-seat suspense that the series is known for.
On the popular social media site, users voiced their dissatisfaction by pointing out a lack of fresh gaming content. Some even implored creators to take a break rather than returning with a new season.
The bitter commentary was inevitably all over X – formerly Twitter – where viewers wrote: ‘#SquidGame2 is so underwhelming likeee WHAT WAS EVEN THAT its lowkey so messy and all over the place too many characters to the point idk who to focus on anymore + didnt even introduce them properly and the ending is S**T I didnt wait 2 years for this….’.
I’ve completed Season 2, but unfortunately, it was disappointing. The depth, emotion, and suspenseful nature that was present in the first season seems to be missing. There appears to be little substance and no real stakes or thrill involved. #SquidGame2
