Square Enix Drops Free Download For Zelda-Inspired RPG

Square Enix, the company behind popular franchises like Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, Kingdom Hearts, and Mana, has just released a free downloadable demo for their new RPG, which is inspired by The Legend of Zelda. Square Enix has a long history of creating both well-known and hidden gem RPGs, and they’ve also published games like Just Cause 3 and the rebooted Tomb Raider series.

The studio is trying something new with a brand-new role-playing game. While it’s not based on any existing franchise, it takes clear inspiration from Zelda in how you fight, explore dungeons, and solve puzzles – and you can download and play it for free today.

You can now try a free demo of The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales on Switch 2, PC (through Steam), PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S (as reported by RPG Site). The demo lets you play the beginning of the game before its official launch on June 18th, and you can even carry your saved progress into the full game when it releases.

The Adventures of Elliot is a fresh action RPG with a beautiful, retro-inspired art style. It plays a lot like the classic 2D Zelda games, but with a modern twist. Unlike other games from the same developers, such as Octopath Traveler and the Live A Live remake, which use turn-based combat, Elliot features real-time sword fighting and a range of other weapons.

The game’s visuals are similar to classic Mana titles, featuring vibrant, 2D landscapes with a distinct Square Enix aesthetic. It also uses a top-down perspective reminiscent of older Zelda games, but the gameplay feels even more inspired by Zelda’s adventurous spirit.

You play as Elliot, tasked with venturing into the ruins surrounding the last city. These ruins are filled with dungeons containing monsters and challenging puzzles. You’ll have seven unique weapons at your disposal, each with special abilities to aid you in battles or puzzle-solving. Throughout your journey, you’ll discover treasure, including magicite fragments used to enhance your weapons.

You’ll also have a fairy companion with unique skills to help you in battles. The game is divided into different time periods, or “Ages,” similar to those found in games like Zelda: Oracle of Ages or Ocarina of Time. How a dungeon looks and plays can change depending on which Age you’re in when you visit it.

You can try out the demo for The Adventures of Elliot now on many different platforms! The full game releases on June 18th. While it’s a brand new game from Square Enix, taking a bit of a risk, its dungeons—which are similar to those in Zelda—are already generating a lot of excitement.
