Spotify Wrapped 2024 is here. It was a good year for música Mexicana

As a passionate music enthusiast who grew up immersed in the vibrant sounds of Latin America, I can’t help but feel a profound sense of excitement and pride as I witness música Mexicana taking the global stage by storm! The genre’s dominance on Spotify this year is a testament to its richness, resilience, and the power of its rhythms to connect people across borders.

2024 Spotify Wrapped data reveals that Mexican music emerged as the most-streamed Latin genre within Mexico as the year of significant growth in Latin music draws to a close.

Streaming plays for the expansive category (consisting of norteños, corridos tumbados, sierreños, cumbias and more) grew by 31% globally over the previous year and was the top Latin genre in 26 U.S. states.

Four out of Spotify’s Top 10 Worldwide Latin Artists are categorized as Mexican music: Peso Pluma (at No. 2), Junior H (at No. 5), Natanael Cano (at No. 7), and Fuerza Regida (at No. 8). Maintaining his position among the genre’s leading figures, Peso Pluma is ranked as the seventh most streamed artist globally. His upcoming 2024 release “Éxodo” (at No. 2) and the 2023 album “Génesis” (at No. 5) both made it to the top five Latin albums.

Emerging Mexican music sensation Xavi, who holds the unique title as the sole artist of Mexican heritage to reach number one on Spotify’s global chart with a solo album, left a lasting mark with his debut single, “La Diabla.” This pop-flavored corrido tells the story of a negative influence in his romantic life and is currently the globally streamed most popular Mexican song, the fourth most favored Latin tune, and the track most frequently added to personal playlists worldwide.

The young singer expressed profound joy and gratitude, addressing both God and those who made it happen, in a statement to The Times. They shared their aspiration to keep moving people through their music with heartfelt melodies.

Under the title “La Diabla,” the song featuring Calle 24, Chino Pacas, and Fuerza Regida is in the number two spot among Mexican music’s top five tunes. This powerful collaboration is closely trailed by “Madonna” from Natanael Cano and Oscar Maydon, another Xavi track titled “La Victima,” and “Si No Quieres No” by Luis R. Conriquez and Neton Vega.

Based on recent statistics, Bad Bunny continues to lead as the top Latin artist in terms of streaming. However, compared to the previous year, he dropped one position in the global ranking of most-streamed artists overall. Remarkably, despite not releasing a new album last year, Bad Bunny managed to secure two spots among the top five most-streamed Latin albums with his 2022 release “Un Verano Sin Ti” at number 2 and his 2023 record “Nadie Sabe Lo Que Va a Pasar Mañana” at number 4.

2024 proved to be a significant year for Colombian artist Karol G, who ranked as the fourth most-streamed Latin artist. Her 2023 album, titled “Mañana Será Bonito,” currently leads the Latin album charts and sits at number four in the global top 10 albums with the highest stream count. Uniquely among Latin musicians, she is the sole representative in the global album ranking.

Just like “Gata Only,” the hit reggaeton song by FloyyMenor and Cris MJ from Chile, is one of the top 10 most streamed songs, landing at No. 4. The popular tune, which has over a billion plays on Spotify, has been spreading quickly due to TikTok.
