SpongeBob SquarePants’ new movie becomes a Netflix hit

As someone who’s been through the ups and downs of life with SpongeBob since his TV debut way back when I was still rocking my flip phone, it’s heartening to see this yellow sea sponge continues to captivate audiences! The new Netflix hit, “Saving Bikini Bottom: The Sandy Cheeks Movie,” is a testament to the timeless appeal of our favorite underwater residents.

As a longtime fan of SpongeBob SquarePants, I was thrilled to see the latest movie become a hit on Netflix. Growing up with this show, I can confidently say that it has played a significant role in shaping my sense of humor and love for animation. This week, it’s been heartening to see the animated film break records as the most-watched English-language film on the streaming service, proving once again that SpongeBob’s charm transcends generations. The fact that I can still enjoy this show with my kids and appreciate its humor just as much as I did when I was younger speaks volumes about its timeless appeal.

“The Adventure in Texas: The Sandy Cheeks Film,” recently added to Netflix, chronicles the tale of SpongeBob SquarePants and his friend Sandy Cheeks. They embark on a mission to Texas when an unexpected plan by a wicked antagonist threatens to relocate Bikini Bottom’s inhabitants from their ocean home.

In the last seven days, the top-viewed English movie on Netflix has been none other than this one, racking up an impressive 12.8 million views. This just goes to show that the sponge from the yellow sea remains a favorite among viewers, having initially captured our hearts back in 1999 when it first appeared on Nickelodeon.

Apart from these, two additional animated kids’ movies have made it to the Global Top 10 list. Currently ranking second is “PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie” with a view count of 7 million, and “Trolls Band Together” holds the fourth spot with 5.9 million views.

As a thrilled fan, I’m excitedly sharing that “Don’t Breathe 2” – the chilling sequel to Rodo Sayagues’ 2016 horror masterpiece, “Don’t Breathe” – has amassed an impressive 5.9 million views, placing it as the third most-watched film!

The movie titled “The Sandy Cheeks” is actually the fourth full-length film in the SpongeBob series, coming after “The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie” (released in 2004), “Sponge Out of Water” (in 2015) and “Sponge on the Run” (which premiered in 2020).

Additionally in the realm of BikineBob’s adventures, it has been affirmed that the beloved character residing in Bikini Bottom exhibits traits of being autistic.

During the 2024 Motor City Comic Con held in Detroit, Tom Kenny, the voice behind SpongeBob since 1999, shared an anecdote about an encounter with a fan on the autism spectrum who questioned if SpongeBob was autistic.

For the very first time, someone posed a query that intrigued me quite uniquely, I shared with the gathering. A fellow, who seemed to be on the spectrum, approached me and inquired, “Tom Kenny, do you think SpongeBob SquarePants is autistic?”

Later on, Kenny remembered replying with: “Absolutely! Let me tell you something. Just like that ability is his superpower, yours is too!”
