Spike Lee and David Byrne’s concert film, AMERICAN UTOPIA, is coming back to UK and Irish cinemas on August 5th for a special one-night showing in 4K. Originally premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival five years ago, the film will be available at both independent and larger chain cinemas, offering audiences a uniquely designed and visually stunning concert experience.

The way the film was made is reason enough to see it on the big screen. Director Lee used eleven camera operators during David Byrne’s Broadway show at the Hudson Theatre, not to simply record the performance, but to capture unique perspectives and intimate moments unavailable to a live audience. Now enhanced in 4K, this footage transforms the cinema screen into what feels like the best seat in the house.

The concert, captured on camera, was more than just a musical performance. Created with choreographer Annie-B Parson and production consultant Alex Timbers, David Byrne’s Broadway show featured 11 musicians from around the world performing simply, barefoot on a bare stage – a departure from typical rock concerts. The setlist included songs from Byrne’s 2018 album, AMERICAN UTOPIA, as well as classic Talking Heads hits like Once in a Lifetime and Burning Down the House. A particularly powerful moment came with a performance of Janelle Monáe’s “Hell You Talmbout,” where the group called out the names of Black Americans who had been unjustly killed, turning the concert into a shared experience of remembrance and protest.

Spike Lee’s filmmaking style was perfectly suited to this project. For decades, the Oscar-winning director has explored themes of race, power, and what it means to be American through his films. His collaboration with David Byrne on AMERICAN UTOPIA felt natural, as both artists consistently use their work to challenge audiences and spark meaningful conversations. The film came after Lee’s Da 5 Bloods, and it resonated deeply with audiences at a time when Janelle Monáe’s message of protest felt particularly powerful – more so than any theatrical direction could have achieved.
