Spider-Verse Producers Confirm the End of An Era For Miles Morales

As a huge fan of the animated Spider-Verse movies, it feels a little bittersweet knowing we’re heading towards the end of this particular story. These films have always felt separate from the main Marvel Cinematic Universe and Sony’s Spider-Man world, which is great because it allowed them to build something truly unique – their own amazing universe! We’re getting a taste of that expanded world this spring with Spider-Noir, but the real conclusion to the core trilogy is still a ways off. Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse is slated for release on June 18, 2027, and I’m already counting down the days!

In an interview with Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, the producers of Spider-Verse, Phil Lord and Chris Miller, announced that Beyond the Spider-Verse will conclude the current story arc for these films. Miller confirmed that this movie is the end of the trilogy, specifically focusing on Miles Morales’ story, though they have ideas for future Spider-Verse projects beyond this particular storyline.

“But this, like the Miles trilogy, this is the last of [these] Spider-Verse stories.”

The movie Spider-Verse has been key in making Miles Morales a popular hero, putting him at the center of the animated films instead of Peter Parker. The films’ success brought Miles to the attention of a new generation of fans, leading to his starring role in Spider-Man games for PlayStation 5. Now, fans are eager to see Miles join the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and even hope to see Tom Holland’s Spider-Man appear in the Spider-Verse films.

Miles and his family have been central to the story throughout the Spider-Verse films – Into the Spider-Verse, Across the Spider-Verse, and now Beyond the Spider-Verse. According to Lord and Miller, the final movie is the most emotionally powerful of the three, and focuses on the challenges of family reconciliation – specifically, how Miles can bring his family back together.

We started thinking about a difficult question: when pursuing your passions and career separates you from your family, how do you rebuild those connections? Is it even possible to have both success and a strong family life?

The adventures across multiple universes in the Spider-Verse films have really complicated Miles’ life. He’s determined to save his father, even though it’s meant to happen, and that’s caused all sorts of Spider-People from different realities to come after him. The biggest surprise came in Across the Spider-Verse when Miles found himself on a different Earth where his version had become the Prowler.

The next installment in Beyond the Spider-Verse will significantly change the direction of the Spider-Verse story. It will conclude Miles Morales’s story and focus on a new generation of Spider-People as the main characters.

What Does the Spider-Verse Look Like Moving Forward?

Although Across the Spider-Verse concludes Miles Morales’ story for now, the Spider-Verse as a whole will continue. Sony is already planning spin-off projects featuring its many Spider-People, beginning with Nicolas Cage reprising his role as Ben Reilly in Spider-Man: Noir.

Beyond 2027, Marvel is planning to continue its animated universe with spin-off movies based on characters from Spider-Verse, including Spider-Gwen and Spider-Punk. These films are currently in development.

As a huge Spider-Verse fan, I’ve noticed Gwen and Spider-Punk really blew up – they’ve become total favorites! It seems like the people behind the movies are smart about this, and are planning to focus on the characters we all connected with the most. I’m excited because giving Gwen and Punk their own films means even more people will discover them, just like happened with Miles. Hopefully, they’ll become just as popular!

Although Miles Morales won’t be the main character in future Spider-Verse movies, he could still appear in them, depending on how the current trilogy ends. A romantic connection has been developing between Miles and Gwen Stacy throughout the Spider-Verse films, and that relationship might continue in a future Spider-Gwen movie. Whether it does will depend on when that film is set and what happens between them in Beyond the Spider-Verse.

Even if something happens to Miles Morales in Spider-Verse 3, the character exists in other universes. This means future spin-offs could still include different versions of Miles from across the multiverse, keeping him as part of the Spider-Verse’s ongoing story.
