Spider-Man veteran confirms he won't return for fourth MCU movie

As a die-hard Marvel fan with over two decades of experience under my belt (and a few gray hairs to show for it), I can confidently say that the news about Jon Watts not returning for Spider-Man 4 has left me feeling like I just got punched in the gut by Doc Ock.

This summer, Marvel Studios made an impressive recovery with the joint release of Deadpool and Wolverine. The film has shattered box office records, earning over $1.2 billion so far. Remarkably, it’s a record-breaking achievement for R-rated movies, surpassing the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s highest-grossing movie since 2021, which was Spider-Man: No Way Home, with its impressive earnings of $1.9 billion.

Considering this, it’s not hard to understand why there’s such great anticipation for the sequel of that movie as well. Given that “No Way Home” followed another Spiderman film in breaking the $1 billion mark and ended up being the 6th highest-grossing movie ever (at the time of its release), it’s clear that both Sony and Marvel Studios are excited to start production on “Spider-Man 4”.

Recently, numerous gossips have swirled around the film, concerning both its storyline and its director. Now, it’s been confirmed that one of the longstanding speculations about the movie, particularly its director, holds truth.

Jon Watts confirms he won’t return for Spider-Man 4 (and why)

Jon Watts has openly stated that he won’t be a part of the fourth film in the Marvel Studios and Sony Spider-Man movie series, a decision he discussed with The Hollywood Reporter during an interview about his upcoming movie “Wolfs”. He elaborated on his reasons for not returning to direct Spider-Man 4.

He remembered the enthusiastic reactions from the crowd after watching Spider-Man: No Way Home, and how they seemed utterly ecstatic about each amazing scene. In that instant, he understood that no matter what, it would be challenging – if not impossible – to replicate or even approach that level of excitement again.

That was such a specific moment in time, and the reaction to that movie was just so unbelievable. It’s never going to be like this, ever again.”

It’s tough to dispute Watts on that point, given how groundbreaking Spider-Man: No Way Home has been regarding cameos and comebacks. The movie generated a lot of buzz in the months and weeks prior to its debut, fueling speculation. Incredibly, it managed to surpass even the most extraordinary anticipations, earning praise from both fans and critics. This led to viral reactions from audiences as they reacted to some of its most impactful scenes.

Spider-Man veteran confirms he won't return for fourth MCU movie

Without a doubt, the movie was the pinnacle of Marvel’s Multiverse Saga, as it brought back Spider-Men played by Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield, leaving viewers in awe of the boundless potential within the MCU’s multiverse. The shared screen time between their characters and Tom Holland’s Spidey was a unique experience seldom seen. However, in an unexpected turn, it seems that this moment might be replicated sooner rather than later, as rumors suggest that Spider-Man 4 will also delve into the multiverse – speculation that has sparked a range of reactions among fans.

Despite previous speculation, it has been officially confirmed that Jon Watts will not be directing the upcoming Spider-Man film. This marks his departure from the franchise, with rumors suggesting a new director or even multiple directors may take over. Watts’ tenure as the director of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Spider-Man series has been successful, as evidenced by the popularity of his films – Spider-Man: Homecoming, Spider-Man: Far From Home, and Spider-Man: No Way Home – which are considered among the franchise’s fan favorites.

At one point, Watts was slated to oversee the fourth Spiderman film and the remake of Marvel’s Fantastic Four. However, he parted ways with the latter project and speculation arose about his future in the former series as well. In a recent chat with Collider, he hinted at the possibility of not rejoining the MCU movie lineup, offering advice to the next Spiderman director. While his words could have been general advice, fans were unsure if this was a confirmation or not. Now, it has been confirmed that Watts will indeed step away from the Marvel Cinematic Universe film series.
