Spider-Man sequel reportedly "scrapped" by Sony; future unclear

As a long-time Spider-Man fan, I must say that my feelings are as complex as a web of emotions. On one hand, I’m thrilled about the upcoming developments in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the expansion of the Spider-Verse. The prospect of Destin Daniel Crettin directing Spider-Man 4 and the return of Tom Holland and Zendaya has me positively giddy!

It’s quite the time to be a Spider-Man fan. The Marvel Cinematic Universe’s third Spidey movie, Spider-Man: No Way Home still has fans thinking about its game-changing moments almost three years on, with audiences ready to embrace the next step in the MCU saga. Marvel Studios also has an animated series, Your Friendly Neighbourhood Spider-Man, on the horizon, and Sony is producing a live-action Spider-Man: Noir series (starring Nicolas Cage!) for MGM+ and Prime Video.

The action is unfolding in the Spider-Verse, as Destin Daniel Crettin has allegedly been chosen to direct “Spider-Man 4,” according to recent reports. This development has been eagerly anticipated by fans, and we can hardly wait to see Tom Holland and Zendaya reprise their roles, returning to the screen to continue the tale of Peter Parker and MJ’s romantic journey. It’s safe to say that this has been a long-awaited moment!

Indeed, it seems that despite positive developments within the Spider-Verse, there appears to be a delay in the release of the next Spider-Man movie, as indicated by a recent report. In other words, we might need to exercise patience for just a while longer.

Sony reportedly scrapped Beyond the Spider-Verse, delaying it

Based on reports from Jeff Sneider, often referred to as The InSneider, Sony has decided not to proceed with the majority of their upcoming animated film “Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse” due to creative reasons. As a result, it seems unlikely that this movie will be released before 2027. This film is eagerly anticipated as the sequel to “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,” which is part of a trilogy born from the original “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.

The two films have demonstrated extraordinary success and widespread appeal among viewers, as fans grow fond of characters like Miles Morales, Spider-Gwen, and the intriguing variants they’ve encountered in the Spider-Verse. Moreover, these movies have been highly praised by critics, with the initial one even earning an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature – a rare feat for superhero or comic book productions.

It’s certainly disappointing to hear that the upcoming installment of the series might be canceled. This would force Sony to start from scratch, inevitably delaying its release more than anticipated. Given its recent removal from Sony’s release schedule, this development is unfortunately not unexpected. Still, it’s a letdown because the film was originally slated for a 2024 release.

Spider-Man sequel reportedly "scrapped" by Sony; future unclear

It’s worth noting that the potential release of Spider-Man 4, slated for around 2026, might have an impact on the timing of Beyond the Spider-Verse. As Sneider suggests, Sony may not want to launch both movies in the same year due to potential competition.

2025 seems less probable as a release year for the upcoming film, given that it’s approaching quickly and Sony hasn’t provided recent updates indicating significant progress. Therefore, it’s highly improbable to anticipate the movie’s release next year.

2027 seems to be the preferred timeline for the film’s release, giving Sony ample opportunity to perfect it without it overlapping with Marvel Studios’ Spider-Man movie. Since both movies could become massive box-office hits, launching them too closely might affect their performance or perplex audiences because they are set in distinct universes.

We’re eagerly looking forward to rejoining the Spider-Verse and seeing Miles again, but unfortunately, “Beyond the Spider-Verse” won’t be hitting theaters for a while. Here’s to hoping it graces our screens as soon as possible.

For now, Sony is set to broaden their live-action Spider-Man universe by unveiling two exciting additions – “Venom: The Final Battle” and “Kraven the Hunter,” both slated for release this year. Enjoy the anticipation!
