A celebrated comic creator breaks down his twisted take on Marvel’s premiere Wall-Crawler, .
According to Bleeding Cool, writer Kieron Gillen has shared his experience working on the upcoming Super Creepshow #1 comic from Image Comics and Skybound Entertainment. He mentioned that he was originally unsure about accepting the offer to contribute a short story to the anthology.
Gillen pointed out that while a story might only be about 10 pages long – a couple of days’ work – the real challenge is coming up with a strong idea. He explained that focusing on developing that idea means he can’t be working on other projects at the same time. He also emphasized that the amount of initial effort is consistent, regardless of story length. A longer story will naturally require more work overall, but the fundamental idea itself remains the same amount of work to create.

So, when they asked for a ‘horror short with a superhero twist,’ I actually had a couple of ideas already. I sent them over, and one really stood out – honestly, it was my favorite. I’ve been kicking around that story idea since I started reading comics as an adult, which is pretty cool, right? But then I started really planning it out, and I realized it was way too big to fit into just 10 pages.
I quickly realized this idea had the potential to become a whole book, so I wanted to keep my options open. That led to me apologizing and taking it back, which ironically meant I ended up starting from square one – exactly what I’d been trying to avoid. It was a slow, organic process, and you might recognize what we were building on.
The first issue of Super Creepshow, coming out in March, is a new series inspired by the popular Super Creepshow Special. That special was full of scary stories with a superhero twist and proved to be a big hit with fans. It also strengthens the Creepshow franchise’s lasting impact on pop culture, building on the success of the original 1982 film by George A. Romero and Stephen King, as well as the subsequent movie trilogy and Greg Nicotero’s TV series.
Each issue will include two thrilling stories created by top writers and artists. First, Kierron Gillen and Rossi Gifford will deliver a story Skybound Entertainment says will be a real thrill ride, and then Ryan North and Derek Charm will explore the dark side of super speed, showing how it can be more of a burden than a gift.
After the positive response to the Super Creepshow Special, Skybound Entertainment’s Ben Abernathy explained how the new Super Creepshow series came about. He said that making a miniseries was an easy decision, and that adding superpowers to the classic Creepshow style really appealed to a lot of creators!
Super Creepshow #1 goes on sale March 18, 2026 from Skybound Entertainment.
