Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man movies are incredibly important to the superhero genre, and many fans have hoped for a continuation of his story. However, the director recently dashed those hopes. While promoting his new film Send Help, Raimi confirmed that Spider-Man 4 isn’t happening, explaining he’s passed the reins to other filmmakers—specifically, those behind the two Spider-Man reboots that have come out since his last film in 2007.
He clarified that his versions of Peter Parker (Tobey Maguire) and Mary Jane Watson (Kirsten Dunst) continued their lives after Spider-Man 3, implying their story didn’t end with the film. It’s reassuring to know this, especially since Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man films were many fans’ first introduction to Marvel. However, his reasons for not making Spider-Man 4 aren’t new information. We’ve understood what happened to Raimi’s Spider-Man and MJ for nearly five years.
‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ Already Told Us What Sam Raimi Just Said

Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures
Okay, so Tobey Maguire didn’t get to make a fourth Spider-Man movie, but any true fan knows he did come back in No Way Home! It was awesome seeing him again. And even though Sam Raimi wasn’t directing that film, what he’s said recently really fits with where his version of Peter Parker was left after Spider-Man 3. What I loved is they didn’t try to make him look young again with CGI. They showed us a Peter who had lived a life since we last saw him, and that meant he could talk about what had happened in those years. It added so much depth!
WEBB-VERSE PETER: “I got no time for, uh, Peter Parker stuff, you know? Do you?”
RAIMI-VERSE PETER: “Uh, that’s a little complicated.”
WEBB-VERSE PETER: “No, I understand. I guess it’s just not in the cards for guys like us.”
RAIMI-VERSE PETER: “Well, I wouldn’t give up. It took a while, but… we made it work.”
WEBB-VERSE PETER: “Yeah?”
RAIMI-VERSE PETER: “Yeah. Me and MJ.”
– Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021)
While No Way Home doesn’t explicitly show Peter and MJ ending up together, it does suggest they reach a positive resolution. This means a potential Spider-Man 4 would have to either change that outcome or acknowledge it, as audiences already believe they have a happy ending. Interestingly, Sam Raimi’s earlier comments about their lives continuing after Spider-Man 3 were confirmed years before he even made them.
Tom Holland’s Peter Parker seemed genuinely content by the end of No Way Home, even with the huge fight he went through. Because of this, a Spider-Man 4 doesn’t feel necessary, even though fans want it. It might actually make more sense to revisit Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man with The Amazing Spider-Man 3. His character clearly dealt with a lot of hardship before appearing in No Way Home. While Sam Raimi wouldn’t be involved in a potential sequel to The Amazing Spider-Man 2, his thoughts about Spider-Man 4 still apply to Garfield’s story. Though time has passed for that version of Spider-Man, No Way Home left many questions about his future unanswered.
MCU Fans May Still Get More of Maguire’s Spider-Man

Sony Pictures Releasing
While there hasn’t been an official announcement about Tobey Maguire returning as Spider-Man after No Way Home, two future Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) films could make it possible. Although the cast of the 2026 film Avengers: Doomsday is likely already full, many fans believe the 2027 film Avengers: Secret Wars could offer another chance for Maguire to appear. Because these movies are expected to bring the MCU’s multiverse storyline to a close, they might feature appearances from a variety of classic Marvel movie stars, and Maguire could be among them.

While it makes sense for Tobey Maguire to be in Secret Wars, there’s been no official confirmation yet. Another popular rumor is that Hugh Jackman will return as Wolverine. Both Jackman and Maguire were huge stars for Marvel during the early days of the movies, so it would be incredible to see them act together as those iconic characters. It’s not the Spider-Man 4 film fans have long hoped for, but this could potentially be even more exciting.
