Spider-Man: Homecoming ending explained: A friendly neighborhood hero is born

As a die-hard Spidey fan with over three decades of web-slinging adventures under my belt, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and anticipation as these latest twists and turns unfold. The MCU’s Vulture popping up in Sony’s universe through some interdimensional shenanigans, a la Kingpin’s Alchemax Collider, is quite the mind-bender! And speaking of brain-teasers, who would’ve guessed that M.J.’s real name was hidden in plain sight all along?

In the world of cinema, Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield each took on the role of Spider-Man in different film series, appearing in 2002 and 2012 respectively. Unfortunately, during these series, fans never got a chance to see Spidey team up with notable Marvel characters like Iron Man, Captain America, or Daredevil, not even once. This was somewhat disappointing, but Sony eventually recognized the opportunity that had been missed and decided to make changes.

2016 brought me the thrill of watching Tom Holland’s live-action portrayal of Spider-Man in “Captain America: Civil War.” Seeing Peter Parker go toe-to-toe with The Winter Soldier and Falcon in the Marvel Cinematic Universe felt like a dream I didn’t know I had. But wait, there’s more! Just a year later, “Spider-Man: Homecoming” graced our screens and left everyone spellbound. This film offered an urban tale that laid the groundwork for countless future escapades of the web-slinging hero.

Now let’s delve into its conclusion and discuss the extent to which it influenced subsequent chapters within this series.

Peter learns what’s needed to be a friendly neighborhood hero

In the story of Captain America: Civil War, Peter Parker found himself stepping into a larger superhero world. Sharing battles with heavyweights like Iron Man and even Captain America ignited a desire within the young hero to prove his worth in more significant roles. Speaking candidly with Happy Hogan, he expressed his feelings by saying, “I guess I’m just feeling like there might be more for me to do. I’m just wondering when the next big mission will come up.

As Spider-Man yearns to be part of the Avengers, he spends his time battling petty crimes in Queens instead. He catches bike thieves, guides lost people, and foils an ATM robbery. Yet, despite his heroic deeds, a nagging feeling persists that he’s destined for something greater. This sentiment occasionally overshadows his everyday heroics. Growing impatient for Tony Stark’s invitation, Peter decides to demonstrate his worth by confronting the latest supervillain on his own.

Spider-Man was advised that battling The Vulture was too tough for him. During a fight with The Vulture’s gang, things nearly sank a ferry, which Iron Man had to rescue. However, after reflecting on his errors and returning to his basic suit, Spider-Man managed to defeat the evil villain while also saving himself in the process. Tony Stark, impressed by these actions, offered Peter the opportunity to join Earth’s strongest heroes – a chance he initially rejected. Shockingly, he chose not to accept this offer.

Peter discovers that stealthy adversaries like The Vulture can evade detection by superheroes such as Iron Man and Captain America. What makes it even more troubling; authorities apparently didn’t act either, shown by Adrian Toomes selling illicit weapons to harmful individuals for eight years without repercussions. Considering this, Spider-Man chooses to employ his strengths and act as a neighborhood hero who watches out for those less fortunate, or in other words, keeps an eye on the underdog.

Adrian Toomes is behind bars, but his story is not over

In the movie “Spider-Man: Homecoming”, Michael Keaton assumed the character of Adrian Toomes. But a hint at the end of the credits suggested that this wasn’t the last time we would encounter him.

Following his discovery of Spider-Man’s true identity and choosing not to carry out a major crime, The Vulture is ultimately incarcerated. In prison, he encounters an acquaintance who goes by Mac Gargan – the character known as The Scorpion in comic books. It comes as no shock that Gargan seeks revenge against Spider-Man, and so requests Adrian Toomes to disclose the hero’s identity. Some speculated this scene hinted at the formation of the Sinister Six, but seven years have passed without it coming to fruition.

Interestingly, we saw The Vulture make a return in the movie Morbius during a rather perplexing post-credits sequence. Now, it’s important to note that Adrian Toomes, who coexists with Peter Parker and Iron Man in the MCU, unexpectedly showed up in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe without any clear explanation. But if you recall, hints about the formation of the Sinister Six were also dropped after that. Fans have been speculating on how The Vulture managed to traverse dimensions, and the most popular theory revolves around the Alchemax Collider from the Spider-Verse series.

In the opening scenes of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, viewers encounter a Vulture from another dimension inexplicably appearing within Spider-Gwen’s universe. Subsequently, it is disclosed that the Kingpin’s collider, as seen in Into the Spider-Verse, had created a vast portal, allowing individuals to be transferred randomly between universes. Consequently, the Spider-Society, headed by Miguel O’Hara, felt compelled to traverse multiple realities to rectify these inconsistencies.

Although it’s not a foolproof concept, it offers an explanation for Michael Keaton’s Vulture encountering Morbius. As for the future of these characters, it’s uncertain, but maybe “Venom: The Last Dance” or “Spider-Man 4” could shed some light on this ongoing enigma.

The MCU’s M.J. was hidden in plain sight

In the storyline of “Spider-Man: Homecoming,” viewers witness Peter Parker developing feelings for Liz Allan, daughter of the villain Vulture. Yet, the film takes an uncommon turn as Peter and Liz end up separating, a twist not often seen in superhero films. However, this unexpected ending has a significant explanation, one that’s subtly revealed within the plot itself.

Right from the start of the film, viewers can notice Zendaya’s character, Michelle, acting somewhat uneasy around Ned Leeds and Peter Parker on several instances. But it isn’t until just before the ending credits that she reveals her friends have nicknamed her “M.J.”, a name derived from Mary Jane in the comic books. This unexpected twist took many by surprise, but regardless of the name change, Michelle Jones seamlessly took on the role of M.J. for future installments of the series.

In “Spider-Man: Far From Home” and “No Way Home”, Peter Parker, also known as M.J., form a relationship that is tested by various challenges until the climax of “No Way Home”. Here, Doctor Strange casts a spell which makes everyone forget about Peter’s existence. Later on, Peter revisits his former girlfriend at her workplace, intending to disclose their past. Upon recognizing that M.J.’s life could flourish without him, Peter chooses to leave, potentially delivering one of the most poignant endings in any Spider-Man film (except for Gwen’s demise, of course).

Could Spider-Man and Michelle Jones rekindle their relationship? Only time will tell when Spider-Man 4 arrives, let’s hope so!
