Over the last several days, enthusiasts of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Spider-Man have been thrilled with some significant developments. Production on the upcoming film “Spider-Man: Fresh Start” has begun, and fans have been given a behind-the-scenes look at Tom Holland in action. Fans are buzzing about Holland’s latest suit design. Additionally, it was confirmed that Michael Mando will reprise his role as Mac Gargan, also known as the Scorpion, which has added to the anticipation among fans, particularly after Mando’s confirmation post.
Despite reputable sources reporting Scorpion’s return, neither Marvel Studios nor Sony have officially confirmed Michael Mando’s role in this development. However, it’s heartening to see that the actor himself is adding fuel to the fire by not shying away from endorsing this intriguing twist of events. Mando recently posted a cryptic selfie on Instagram, which seems to hint at his character. The monochrome image shows only half of his face, with his scorpion tattoo on display – a mark that Gargan is well-known for bearing. Here’s the picture, accompanied by Mando’s clever caption:
Based on the distinctive tattoo on his neck, it’s quite possible that the Elysium actor was on set when the photo was taken. However, we can’t confirm whether or not he actually was there. Regardless of where the picture was snapped, it’s exciting to see this undervalued performer preparing to resume his villainous role. For quite a while now, I’ve been eagerly anticipating Mac Gargan’s moment in the spotlight, and this selfie certainly makes that expectation feel more tangible for me.
It’s been quite some time since the character Gargan was last featured in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, having made his most recent appearance in 2017’s “Spider-Man: Homecoming.” (You can catch this movie on Disney+ with a subscription.) In that film, Mac is shown as a prospective buyer of goods from Adrian Toomes, also known as The Vulture. However, Spider-Man interrupts the transaction, resulting in Gargan getting facially scarred and being arrested by the FBI. Seeking revenge against the young hero, Gargan later encounters (who is also arrested) Toomes, but fails to find out if he knows Spidey’s real identity.
As a passionate cinema enthusiast, I firmly believe Michael Mando possesses the raw intensity and captivating charm needed for the Scorpion role. For my money, his true talent was showcased in Better Call Saul, where he portrayed Ignacio “Nacho” Varga. Mando is an actor who excels not only in spoken dialogue but also in subtle, expressive body language. In essence, he communicates volumes through minimal actions. Undeniably, the Scorpion character will likely demand a more extravagant performance, perhaps even requiring him to devour some scenery – and that’s precisely what gets me pumped!

In the Destin Daniel Cretton-directed film “Brand New Day”, not just Scorpion who’s known from the MCU will make an appearance. Additionally, Jon Bernthal is reprising his role as Frank Castle, also known as The Punisher, a character he initially portrayed in Marvel TV series. Moreover, Mark Ruffalo is set to return as Bruce Banner/Hulk. As for the plot, details are currently sparse. However, it’s been mentioned that this story will focus on street-level events and will reportedly take place before the upcoming “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Secret Wars”.
Although it’s uncertain how significant Michael Mando’s character will be in the fourth Spider-Man movie, I can’t help but feel excited at the prospect of him appearing and potentially donning a massive mechanical tail. Fingers crossed that filming goes well for him and he gets plenty of screen time this time!
2026 will see the release of “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” in cinemas, with its premiere scheduled for July 31.
