‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Will Officially Include 5 Main Types of Villains

The new Spider-Man movie, starring Tom Holland, will feature a particularly powerful group of villains when it hits theaters on July 31st. Spider-Man: Brand New Day will challenge Peter Parker with a variety of threats as he also deals with a strange new mutation and tries to reconnect with his friends Ned (Jacob Batalon) and MJ (Zendaya).

During his time as Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Tom Holland’s character has faced a series of increasingly challenging villains. These include Vulture (Michael Keaton) in Homecoming, the trickster Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal) in Far From Home, and ultimately a battle against multiple universes in No Way Home. That final fight brought back classic Spidey foes like Green Goblin (Willem Dafoe), Doctor Octopus (Alfred Molina), Electro (Jamie Foxx), Sandman (Thomas Haden Church), and Lizard (Rhys Ifans).

It looks like the upcoming movie, Brand New Day, is going to take the action to a new level. The initial trailer revealed that Michael Mando will be back as Scorpion – a villain Peter previously battled in Homecoming – promising a thrilling rematch.

I’m really excited about how they’re portraying the villains in Brand New Day! What’s cool is that their power doesn’t come from being naturally gifted – it’s all thanks to technology and experiments. Take Mac Gargan, for example – he gets his incredible strength, speed, and reflexes from these experiments, and even develops a sort of ‘Scorpion-sense’ that’s like Spider-Man’s Spider-Sense, but even stronger, all boosted by his signature tail! It’s a really interesting take on villain origins.

Marvel seems to be aiming for a more realistic style, and Scorpion’s high-tech suit looks a lot like the armored suits we’ve seen in previous Marvel movies.

Fred Myers, known as Boomerang in Marvel Comics, used to be a professional baseball pitcher. After his baseball career, he joined a criminal group who recognized his incredible throwing ability. They provided him with special weapons designed to work with his skills, and he became the villain Boomerang.

Boomerang’s part in Brand New Day will probably be small, but he’ll still be recognizable as the character known for his awesome suit and ability to throw things really well.

Agent-Based

In the Brand New Day storyline, not all villains gained their powers through training or technology. Some acquired them unexpectedly. For example, Lonnie Lincoln started as a remarkably large and strong man who climbed the ranks of organized crime simply by using his size and strength.

Everything shifted when Robbie Robertson mistakenly trapped him in a room filled with Diox-3, a preservation gas. The gas altered him, making his skin incredibly tough and nearly impossible to damage.

As a big Spider-Man fan, I’m really excited about what Disney+’s animated series is doing! It looks like they’re taking the classic Tombstone character and giving him a fresh start, essentially re-imagining how he became a villain as we head into the second season. It’s cool to see them putting their own spin on things.

In the movie Brand New Day, Marvin Jones III plays Tombstone. The film has a gritty, realistic feel, and Tombstone is expected to be a significant character, with some viewers suggesting he might even be the main villain.

Born With Powers

Although Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures haven’t confirmed Sadie Sink’s part, many believe she might be playing Jean Grey in the upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day movie.

This would bring something completely fresh to Spider-Man’s world within the MCU: a character with powers she was born with, rather than powers gained from an accident or technology. Reports suggest she might have telepathic abilities, like mind control, and could potentially manipulate people, similar to what we saw with the DODC agents in the trailer.

The biggest danger actually comes from Jean Grey as she’s portrayed in the comics. She’s an incredibly powerful mutant – an ‘Omega-level’ one – with amazing mental and telekinetic abilities, and she’s linked to the Phoenix Force, a being that could cause widespread devastation.

If this is Jean, she’s a much younger and frightened version of the character, likely before she began training at Charles Xavier’s school to learn how to control her powerful abilities.

Supernatural

The Hand, a mysterious organization, first appeared in Season 1 of Daredevil, primarily through the character Nobu Yoshioka (played by Peter Shinkoda). It continued to be important in Season 2 and in other Marvel shows on Netflix.

As a huge Marvel fan, it’s awesome to see how connected everything is! The Hand, that shadowy organization, kept causing trouble for our heroes in shows like Iron Fist and The Defenders, and those stories are officially part of the main MCU timeline. I was especially excited to spot them in the Brand New Day trailer – twice! You see them in their classic red gear, first fighting Spider-Man inside a prison, and then launching an attack on him from a rooftop. It’s great seeing those connections made and building up the larger universe.

I’m still trying to figure out why these villains are after Spider-Man, honestly. It feels like there’s a bigger picture here, and their focus on him is definitely connected to whatever that is. It’s a huge mystery, and I think his connection to it is key.

Human / Unknown

I’m really curious about Tarantula going into this new movie! He’s the one villain where I honestly don’t know what to expect power-wise. It’s interesting because, originally, in the comics, Anton Rodriguez was just a really gifted athlete, super skilled in hand-to-hand combat before he became the villain we know.

Initially, this character was considered a normal human threat. But the comics reveal a more disturbing origin: the Brand Corporation tried to give him spider-like abilities with a special serum. Instead, the serum caused a dangerous, out-of-control transformation, turning him into a monstrous, spider-like creature.

The trailer suggests Tarantula will appear briefly in a slow-motion scene. Because his part seems small and no actor has been officially announced to play him, he probably won’t be a key character and likely won’t have significant powers.
