For the past few months, news about Spider-Man’s upcoming movie has been overshadowed by Avengers: Doomsday. While Doomsday received multiple previews during the holidays, fans had to wait for a trailer for Spider-Man’s summer return. After a series of short, teasing clips, the full trailer is finally here, promising a major event for the Marvel Universe.
Besides Spider-Man: No Way Home and Deadpool & Wolverine, the Multiverse Saga hasn’t consistently produced blockbuster hits. After pandemic-related delays and quickly-released films, combined with Marvel movies becoming available on Disney+ soon after their theatrical release, Marvel Studios has had trouble motivating audiences to go to the movies.
In 2024, Deadpool & Wolverine easily surpassed $1 billion at the box office, as expected. However, 2023 was a generally disappointing year for Marvel movies. While Captain America: Brave New World, Thunderbolts, and The Fantastic Four: First Steps all made a decent amount of money, they weren’t big enough hits to justify their high production costs – each film had a budget of over $150 million.

Sony Pictures
Spider-Man is easily Marvel’s most popular and financially successful hero. While No Way Home‘s ambitious multiverse storyline, uniting Spider-Man versions and villains from over two decades of films, earned an incredible $2 billion at the box office – a feat unlikely to be matched by Brand New Day – failing to reach $1 billion in ticket sales would raise concerns about the direction of Marvel Studios under Kevin Feige.
Okay, so the buzz around Sony and Marvel’s Spider-Man deal is getting interesting. It seems Sony, after some underwhelming results with spin-offs like Morbius and Madame Web, is hoping to integrate those characters into the main Marvel Cinematic Universe. Venom has been the only real success for them so far. While nothing’s confirmed, there’s a strong suggestion that Venom will eventually swing into the MCU, but we’re looking at a wait – specifically, after Avengers: Secret Wars. Apparently, that film is going to drastically reshape the MCU, and Sony’s hoping to time Venom’s arrival with that big shake-up. It’s a smart move, honestly, to try and capitalize on the momentum of a universe that’s already working.
