Spider-Man: Brand New Day Rumor Should Please Fans Who Are Hyped About Punisher’s Return

A key feature of Tom Holland’s Spider-Man films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been team-ups with other heroes, and the upcoming *Spider-Man: Brand New Day* looks set to take that to a whole new level. The movie is expected to include a large number of heroes from across the Marvel franchise. Jon Bernthal is confirmed to return as the Punisher, and a new rumor suggests who he’ll be battling in the film, which is exciting news for fans of the character.

According to DanielRPK (via Heroic Hollywood), Jon Bernthal’s Punisher will reportedly clash directly with the villain Tombstone. Marvin Jones III, who previously voiced the character in *Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse* and also starred in *Black Lightning*, is set to play Lonnie Lincoln, aka Tombstone, in live-action. Given The Punisher’s history of taking down criminals, it’s not surprising that Tombstone would be on his radar.

If this information is correct, Tombstone probably won’t be the main villain in the new *Spider-Man* movie. He’ll likely play a smaller, supporting role – perhaps helping or teaming up with Scorpion (Michael Mando), or creating his own problems. Either way, the Punisher will go after him, and Spider-Man will almost certainly get involved to help, even if the Punisher doesn’t want him there.

Disney+ offers a streaming library including Spider-Man movies, Daredevil, The Punisher, and other Marvel favorites. Plans start at $9.99 per month (increasing to $11.99 on October 21, 2025) with ads. You can watch without ads for $15.99 a month (increasing to $18.99 on October 21, 2025), or save 16% by paying $159.99 for a full year. See the deal here.

Although this is Tombstone’s first live-action appearance, a different version of the character appeared in the animated series *Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man* earlier this year – that version was much younger. Meanwhile, Jon Bernthal has been playing The Punisher for almost ten years, starting with *Daredevil* Season 2 and continuing with his own series. He recently reprised the role for Season 1 of *Daredevil: Born Again*, and those appearances, along with a Punisher TV special, will happen before *Brand New Day* is released.

Besides the previously announced heroes for the next Spider-Man movie, Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk has also been confirmed to appear, though Ruffalo was initially hesitant to talk about it. Florence Pugh is expected to return as Yelena Belova, and there’s a strong possibility Charlie Cox will reprise his role as Matt Murdock, this time fully embracing his Daredevil persona. While Vincent D’Onofrio likely won’t be back as Wilson Fisk/Kingpin, his character’s opposition to vigilantes, in his role as the mayor of New York City, will reportedly play a part in the story.

Jon Bernthal’s Punisher has always appeared in Marvel projects geared towards mature audiences. It will be interesting to see how his violent character fits into the more family-friendly Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which comes out on July 31, 2026. I’m especially wondering if his opponent, Tombstone, will survive the movie, or if he’ll be killed by a gunshot.
