Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse Finally Gets Encouraging Update After Creative Reset

Unfortunately, the release of the next Spider-Verse movie, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, has been delayed. Despite the anticipation and excitement surrounding the film, Sony has announced a new release date of June 18, 2027.

The project was initially delayed because of the SAG-AFTRA strike. After that, progress stalled because the producers – Phil Lord, Chris Miller, Amy Pascal, Avi Arad, and Jinko Gotoh – emphasized their commitment to quality, even while also aiming for a March 2026 release date.

Look, I get that the team wants to make Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse absolutely perfect, and a little delay – just three weeks this time, which is way better than the original ‘indefinite’ hold-up – is totally understandable. Honestly, any positive news about this movie feels huge to me, and I’m just relieved to hear anything good at all!

And, with that said, good news has finally arrived for Morales.

According to Sony Pictures Animation presidents Kristine Belson and Damien de Froberville, who spoke with The Hollywood Reporter, the movie is now in full animation – a major milestone. They also shared their belief that, like its previous installments, this film has the potential to be groundbreaking and significantly impact the animation industry.

De Froberville admitted he was initially wondering how the creators would follow up the success of Across the Spider-Verse. However, after seeing early artwork and designs for Beyond the Spider-Verse, he was incredibly impressed. ‘We see a lot of concept art,’ he explained, ‘but the latest presentation was truly amazing.’

Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse Is At a Critical Stage

That’s a really great detail! Plus, the next movie will continue the story right after where the last one left off – there’s just so much to consider about that!

Additionally, De Froberville and Belson mentioned stories about how challenging it was for animators to work with Lord and Miller, who had a reputation for continuing to write and refine the script even while the animation was in progress, rather than finishing it beforehand.

De Froberville explained that the editing team had been working on-site, even setting up their final edits in the courtyard, simply to be near the Spider-Verse project. Belson added that everyone involved is happy with their assignment. While challenging periods – often called ‘crunch time’ – are common on projects like Spider-Verse and others, the team members genuinely want to be working on these large-scale, exciting productions.

While it doesn’t fully solve the problem of animating a script that’s still being written or frequently revised, it seems like everyone involved is now in agreement, which wasn’t the case previously.

To aid in that effort, the SPA execs made tweaks to the creative process this time around.

De Froberville explained they adjusted the production process. While they anticipate Chris and Phil will always make last-minute changes, the goal was to reduce the amount of rework needed later on. They hired Alice Brooks as a cinematographer, and she’s been using camera techniques that were different from those used in Spider-Verse.

Changes Were Made, Progress Has Arrived for Miles Morales

As of early February 2026, De Froberville explained that work on Spider-Verse was now in the animation phase. Because the directors and Chris and Phil are able to refine things early in the storyboarding process and clearly visualize the final look, there are fewer revisions needed later when the work goes to Imageworks.

According to project leaders, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse is currently expected to release in June 2026. While standalone films for Miles Morales and Spider-Gwen aren’t in development, work on the broader Spider-Verse project is still moving forward.

There’s exciting news for the upcoming Spider-Verse movie! As plans for the 2026 release develop, a star from Stranger Things is reportedly in contention to play Miles Morales in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and the first official trailer is now available.

Fans are eagerly hoping everything goes smoothly so we can get more Spider-Verse – the world is waiting for it!

You can now watch both Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse on Disney+.
