Spider-Man and Daredevil Trapped in Thunderbolts’ Void: New York’s Darkest Hour
Warning! This article contains spoilers for Thunderbolts*
In many intertwined narratives spanning multiple universes, an enormous void nearly swallowed New York – a city frequently under threat due to its status as a shared territory among heroes such as Daredevil, Spider-Man, and others. Given the high concentration of superheroes in NYC, it’s no surprise that this metropolis is often at risk from malevolent forces like villains, aliens, or monsters, who relentlessly target it for attack.
In the comic book series “Thunderbolts,” New York City suffered a horrific incident as a dark abyss erupted from Bob Reynolds, also known as Sentry. This abyss swiftly transformed people into mere shadows on the ground and went on to wreak havoc, engulfing skyscrapers and even extending beyond the island’s water. The “Thunderbolts” comic also showed the fate of the anti-heroes who were sucked into this void, but it is possible that many more heroes in New York were within its reach.
The Void Was Big Enough To Reach More New York Heroes Like Spider-Man & Daredevil
All The New York Superheroes Got Absorbed In The Void
Because Thunderbolts reveals the void stretching far away, effectively converting significant parts of New York into an empty expanse filled with mere shapes, it’s not hard to envision that this event swept up other well-known characters from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Not all heroes dwell in New York; for instance, Scott Lang calls the West Coast his home, while Sam Wilson frequently embarks on missions overseas. However, there are heroes who prioritize serving their local community, particularly focusing on aiding their neighborhood. One such hero is Matt Murdock, more famously known as Daredevil, whose relentless pursuit of protecting and serving Hell’s Kitchen consumes him.
Furthermore, frequently referred to as “the Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man,” our friendly neighborhood web-slinger is commonly spotted navigating the bustling streets of New York City. Typically, his range extends beyond that of Daredevil, but it’s reasonable to assume he was within the confines of New York City when the void started expanding. However, even though Spider-Man might have been able to flee to safety, the void moved at an alarming pace, seemingly gaining speed as it progressed. This rapid spread indicates that both Daredevil and Spider-Man may have found themselves ensnared within the void.
What Would Spider-Man & Daredevil Have Seen In The Void?
The Darkest Parts Of Their Stories Brought To Light
Even though Daredevil and Spider-Man are skilled heroes who have faced insurmountable challenges before, given that neither was present during the events leading up to the void’s emergence outside the old Avengers tower, they might find themselves taken aback and dazed by the sudden manifestation of the void. Although they would surely have attempted to escape or discover the source of this mystery, because they were not acquainted with Bob, it seems improbable that they could locate him as effectively as the New Avengers did.
Consequently, it appears they were both trapped within a horrific repetition of their most traumatic moments. For Matt, this could involve the recurring image of Foggy getting murdered by Bullseye, or a mission alongside Frank that ended with him failing to prevent countless lives being lost, or even moments where he himself stood on the brink of taking lives like Benjamin Poindexter. To add to his burden, Matt’s past is riddled with tragedy: becoming blind in an accident, losing his father at the hands of mobsters, and being trained and then abandoned by Stick as a boy.
For Peter Parker, life has undergone a dramatic shift due to people no longer recognizing him. This anonymity could manifest itself in several ways, such as him standing by helplessly as his former girlfriend MJ fails to recognize him, or holding his Aunt May as she takes her last breath without knowing who he is. Alternatively, it might refer to a pivotal moment from before the start of the movies, perhaps related to Uncle Ben’s death. The events surrounding this loss might be what continues to torment Peter. Additionally, significant instances with his mentor, Tony Stark, could linger in Peter’s memory, like Tony’s demise, Peter’s vanishing during the blip, or Tony’s disapproval when Peter misused his powers.
Spider-Man & Daredevil Experiencing The Void Could Be Addressed In Upcoming Phase 6 Projects
The Void Taking Over New York Has Far Reaching Effects
Given the expansive influence of the void depicted in Thunderbolts, it seems likely that this incident will have profound effects, much like the Battle of New York or the destruction of Sokovia. This event could potentially be referenced in future Marvel projects. Consequently, it appears fitting for Daredevil: Born Again season 2 to incorporate some references to it, as well as Spider-Man: Brand New Day. This might serve to underscore how this experience affected the individual heroes and those close to them. If, on the other hand, these series choose not to acknowledge the events at all, they risk undermining the interconnectedness of their narratives.
In the final episode of season 1 of “Born Again”, it becomes apparent that Mayor Wilson Fisk is on a mission to eliminate vigilantes, using his Anti-Vigilant Task Force. As the city’s mayor, he will likely use this situation as additional proof that vigilantes are jeopardizing the city’s safety. This could be made worse by Fisk’s own struggles, like being apart from Vanessa or taking his father’s life. These events might also prompt Matt to investigate other heroes in New York, who may have emerged from hiding following the arrival of the New Avengers.
In “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” the story might take an entirely new direction unless it somehow intertwines with Daredevil and Wilson Fisk’s narratives, potentially leading to an unexpected alliance between the heroes. However, due to its imminent release following “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Avengers: Secret Wars,” the film may need to align more closely with these movies. The events could also cause Peter Parker to fret about friends like Ned Leeds and MJ, even though they don’t recall him. This could prompt him to reconnect with them or possibly delve into darker aspects of his past that were previously unexplored, particularly in relation to the incidents depicted in “Thunderbolts.
