Marvel Studios seems to be connecting the stories of Spider-Man and Shang-Chi in surprising ways. Recent reports suggest positive developments for Spider-Man 5, but also create some uncertainty about another anticipated Marvel sequel.
Destin Daniel Cretton rumored to be direct Spider-Man 5 as well
Entertainment source My Time To Shine Hello reports that Destin Daniel Cretton is likely to direct the next Spider-Man movie, Spider-Man 5. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), they mentioned the plan is for Cretton to direct, but it’s unclear how this will affect the planned Shang-Chi sequel. This is positive news for Spider-Man fans, suggesting Marvel is happy with Cretton’s work and wants him to continue with the franchise.
This news might make things tricky for the next Shang-Chi movie. With Destin Daniel Cretton potentially directing Spider-Man 5, he may not be available to direct the Shang-Chi sequel, particularly since the first film came out in 2021.
Although some fans might be upset that Cretton could direct Spider-Man 5 instead of Shang-Chi 2, this doesn’t automatically mean the Shang-Chi sequel will be delayed beyond Avengers: Secret Wars. If Cretton’s schedule doesn’t allow him to return, Marvel Studios can easily find another director – either someone new or a filmmaker they’ve worked with before – to continue the Shang-Chi story.
Actor Simu Liu recently discussed who could direct future installments of his show, The Copenhagen Test, during a question-and-answer session on X. If current director Destin Daniel Cretton doesn’t return, Liu suggested Lee Isaac Chung, the directing team known as Daniels, and Chloé Zhao as excellent choices.
Although there was initial excitement, the future of Shang-Chi 2 is currently unclear. Marvel announced the sequel four years ago, but there haven’t been any updates recently, and it’s not on the schedule of films planned for 2026. Simu Liu will return as Shang-Chi in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday movie, ensuring the character remains part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Tom Holland returns as Spider-Man in ‘Brand New Day,’ alongside Zendaya, Mark Ruffalo, and Jon Bernthal. Directed by Cretton and written by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers, the movie is scheduled to hit theaters on July 31, 2026.
