Spider-Man 4 Desperately Needs to Fix This Major MCU Problem
In approximately one year and a few months, on July 31, 2026, the movie “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,” directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, will be released in theaters. This highly anticipated film signifies the start of a new Spider-Man trilogy within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Tom Holland will return to portray Spider-Man, and the storyline picks up after the significant events in “Spider-Man: No Way Home.” As its title implies, “Brand New Day” introduces a new phase in Peter Parker’s life where he gets a fresh start.
Enthusiasts eagerly anticipate seeing more of the character who’s been out of the Marvel Cinematic Universe for over three years, and the upcoming sequel has a task: resolving certain issues that have arisen with Spider-Man. Lately, MCU projects have presented a challenge for Spidey that needs to be tackled in “Brand New Day“. Fortunately, the solution is straightforwardit simply involves keeping the wall-crawling hero in his home city of New York City.
Thunderbolts* and Daredevil: Born Again Create a Spider-Man Problem
New York City’s Best Defender Hasn’t Been Doing a Great Job Lately
2025 has been a successful year for the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), but one of its projects has created a significant challenge for the franchise concerning Spider-Man. This predicament becomes evident when Wilson Fisk, a known criminal and mob boss, is elected as the mayor of New York City. Since Spider-Sense would be activated in the presence of such a dangerous individual, it’s logical to assume that Peter Parker/Spider-Man would start investigating immediately. Viewers might accept that Spider-Man carries out these actions behind the scenes during the first season of Born Again, but things take a dramatic turn in the finale.
When Fisk imposes martial law following a chaotic, violent, and murderous night on the streets of Manhattan, Spider-Man’s absence becomes more striking. The city’s protector, who usually operates in New York, is nowhere to be found as the city disintegrates, leaving fans questioning whether he is fulfilling his promise to help the common people effectively.
In just a few short months, New York City found itself under siege from an unnamed enemy. When Valentina Allegra de Fontaine introduced her latest superhero, the Sentry, things took a turn for the worse as he gave in to his dark Void persona. With nightmarish abilities that ensnared individuals within their own personal “torment chambers,” the Void wreaked havoc on New York’s citizens, leaving the Thunderbolts scrambling to rescue as many lives as they could. Unfortunately, during the Void’s rampage, Spider-Man was conspicuously absent. Though some might argue that he was trapped by the Void and in need of saving himself, fans can’t help but notice his absence when New York City needed him most. While it is understood that Sony’s limited agreement with Marvel restricts Spider-Man’s appearances outside his franchise, the issue persists. As things stand, Spider-Man seems to be neglecting his duty to protect New York City.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day Needs to Take Place in New York
Peter Parker Needs to Stick to His Friendly Neighborhood in Spider-Man 4
To avoid the disappointing pattern that portrays Spider-Man as an ineffective guardian of his hometown, there needs to be a change within the Spider-Man franchise itself. This could potentially involve bringing Peter Parker back to New York City. Two out of Tom Holland’s three Spider-Man films have taken the web-slinging hero away from Manhattan, with “Homecoming” featuring an extended journey to Washington D.C., although fortunately, it returns to New York for its final act. Similarly, “Far From Home” is primarily set in Europe, with Spider-Man visiting various locations such as London, Venice, and Prague. While these trips are enjoyable, it’s now time for Spider-Man to establish a permanent presence in the Big Apple.
It appears that Marvel Cinematic Universe intentionally moved Spider-Man out of New York as a means to give a fresh take on the character. Following the completion of Tobey Maguire’s and Andrew Garfield’s franchises, they felt it was time for something new. Now, it seems appropriate for Spider-Man to revisit his old role as the guardian of New York City. Comic book fans are familiar with this character’s duty to handle local issues, battling cunning villains like Doctor Octopus in Manhattan while making sure he gets home to Forest Hills on time for dinner. Showing Spider-Man upholding his promise to Tony Stark and protecting the common man would help restore the character’s image among fans. Even if Spider-Man isn’t there to save the city from Kingpin or The Void, he can still shield his people from any danger that may emerge in Brand New Day.
Recent Rumors Spell Trouble for Brand New Day
Marvel Fans Are Worried About Spider-Man 4
It appears that some recent speculation hints at the possibility that “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” may not address the increasing NYC issue within the MCU. Some theories propose a heavy emphasis on multiversal themes in the forthcoming Spider-Man film sequel, making its narrative more akin to “No Way Home,” which dealt with characters from other dimensions as part of the final stage of the Multiverse Saga. Although this doesn’t guarantee that future events will unfold outside of New York City, it implies that Peter Parker may not embody the “Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man” persona as enthusiastically as fans anticipate when he returns to our screens in the upcoming installment.
Additionally, it’s been reported that the film is planning to shoot scenes in stunning locations such as Morocco. This might imply that “Brand New Day” will continue in the vein of “Far From Home,” sending Peter Parker on international adventures. However, these exotic sequences could also focus on characters other than Spider-Man. Here’s hoping Marvel Studios and Sony make wise decisions with the Spider-Man franchise going forward. Fans are less interested in seeing more globe-trotting Spider-Man battling Avengers-level threats. Instead, the next chapter for his character should focus on him fully embracing his role as New York City’s protector. “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” would likely be more well-received by fans if it took a realistic approach to superhero films, being set entirely in New York, as Peter Parker works towards creating a more stable life for himself within the city.
