Spencer Matthews reveals heartbreaking reason he will never attempt to climb Mount Everest and why it would be ‘selfish’ and ‘insensitive’

The television host, aged 36, achieved a historic feat on Tuesday by finishing 30 marathons in 30 consecutive days across the Jordanian desert. He’s now brainstorming his next attempt to set another record recognized by Guinness World Records.
However, Spencer chose not to ascend the Himalayan mountain due to concerns that such an expedition might bring further heartache to his family, as they experienced tragedy when his brother Michael went missing and later died shortly after becoming the youngest British climber to reach the peak in 1999.
In simpler terms, Spencer, who chronicled his quest to recover his brother’s lost remains in the Disney+ series “Finding Michael,” stated that it wouldn’t be appropriate for him to embark on the expedition to climb the world’s tallest mountain, despite his wish to do so.
He expressed that it would be rather self-centered for him to take such action. As climbing was something that deeply resonated with Mike, not with himself, it would seem more like an act of vain glory.
Wouldn’t it be amazing to stand atop the world and witness that breathtaking view personally? Absolutely, in my viewpoint, such an experience would be truly awe-inspiring.
Spencer added, ‘However, considering the painful grief our family has endured, it seems unfair to ask them to face such an ordeal once more, even though Everest might be less challenging and potentially safer compared to its state in 1999 due to increased commercialization.’
At high altitudes, there remain risks of natural disasters and unpredictable events that could potentially endanger life in an instant. Compared to lower elevations, there are more factors beyond your control up there. If something were to malfunction, things could take a turn for the worse rather swiftly, and it’s not like having command over your destiny as you would at sea level or above it.
Earlier, Spencer shared with TopMob that he joined the ultra-desert marathon to connect more deeply with Michael, who was an avid explorer and mysteriously vanished at the age of 22.
After finishing this immense trek, spanning a distance of 786 miles and enduring temperatures reaching up to 38 degrees, the broadcaster acknowledges that he has achieved something worthy of his pride.
Spencer has not always found a feeling of contentment and self-satisfaction coming naturally, as he struggled with alcohol addiction for quite some time after gaining popularity on the E4 reality show “Made In Chelsea”.

If I could preserve this sensation and keep experiencing it perpetually, that would be something truly delightful for me. This moment, with all its beauty, holds a special place in my life.
During the last few days of Spencer’s month-long journey, Vogue accompanied him, along with Theodore, aged five, and Gigi, aged three. Meanwhile, their youngest, Otto, who was only two years old, remained at home.
As a lifestyle enthusiast, I recently embarked on an exciting journey with my spouse, taking off for the enchanting land of Jordan. Our destination? A well-deserved celebration in honor of our remarkable son’s heartfelt, record-breaking accomplishment.
Spencer regularly found himself immersed in a demanding task that necessitated several months of prior planning. This situation often left him without electricity for extended periods, consequently limiting his ability to maintain frequent communication with Vogue.
For six years, he has consistently recognized the significant role his wife played in making his dream a reality, acknowledging that it would not have come true without her steadfast support.
However, it seems that his next significant undertaking might not occur for several years, as Spencer points out that the young age of their children makes prolonged absences from home particularly challenging.
He mentioned that reaching the finish line signifies the conclusion of this particular challenge, yet it also marks the beginning of an entirely fresh phase in his life.
While it might seem intense, I must admit I excel at this endeavor and truly cherish it. However, due to the fact that our kids are still quite tender-aged, I’m hesitant about scheduling too many 30-day projects since being away from them for a month is quite challenging.
As a lifestyle connoisseur, I am deeply grateful to Vogue for stepping up and caring for our precious kids during my recent journey pursuing a dream. It would have been quite challenging without the unwavering support of my extraordinary spouse.
However, should I mention next month another trip, it might not sit too comfortably. It’s been quite some time, and I miss them dearly – my partner and our kids.
While running 30 consecutive marathons, Spencer faced challenging living circumstances such as sleeping on a hard surface, following a strict diet, and only occasionally having access to cold water.
For several days, Spencer stated that he didn’t take a shower, and on the rare occasions he could clean up, the water came from a garden hose, which might have been unhygienic.
The profoundly impactful event ignited his determination to achieve greatness, and the celebrated personality attributes his unwavering dedication to always prioritizing the noble cause of the international charity, Make Some Noise, as the driving force behind his success.
So far, Spencer’s tireless work has garnered £340,757 for the charity. Sacrifices like indulging in exotic dishes, such as boiled goat’s head, and shedding a little over one and a half stones seem more than justified now.
He expressed gratitude for the fact that people took the time and showed kindness to accompany him on this journey. From the outset, his goal was not only to collect a significant amount of funds for Global’s Make Some Noise, but also to make a positive difference in as many lives as he could.
Upon my departure, I had the privilege of connecting with several underfunded charities. Witnessing firsthand the impactful work that Global’s Make Some Noise carries out for these organizations without consistent financial resources is truly awe-inspiring.
‘Encountering families who’ve found aid following hardships such as grief, homelessness, solitude, and loss has been a powerful motivator for me during difficult times. It served as a reminder that despite my own struggles being temporary, the challenges faced by those we assist are often more enduring.’
Spencer has been actively fundraising for the Global’s Make Some Noise charity, an organization that aids various charities such as the Childhood Tumor Trust, Suicide & Co, educational charities like ATF and Playskill.
