Spencer Matthews says he wasn’t asked to join Jamie Laing’s Ultra Marathon Challenge, and they finally explained what caused the rumors of a disagreement between them on Wednesday.
Jamie, age 36, successfully ran 150 miles in five days during March to raise over £2 million for Comic Relief.
The Radio 1 DJ was cheered on by his friends and family during his tough bike ride from London to Salford. Guests included Oliver Proudlock from Made In Chelsea, Leanne Quigley, the winner of The Traitors, and fellow Radio 1 host Greg James, who all surprised him along the way.
People were surprised that Spencer wasn’t there, and it made the rumors about a falling out between the two friends even stronger.
Okay, so you won’t *believe* this. Spencer, my absolute hero – the guy who ran *thirty* marathons in the Jordanian desert last year, thirty! – he was on his podcast, ‘Untapped,’ and he just casually dropped that he… wasn’t invited to something. Can you even imagine? *Not invited*! It’s just… shocking. I’m still reeling, honestly. He’s incredible, and someone didn’t even ask him?!
Okay, so everyone’s been talking about us, and honestly, watching him take on that challenge was just… incredible. I need everyone to know, I absolutely *did not* ignore it or anything! It was genuinely amazing to watch, and I was so impressed. I’m obsessed, okay?

He went on to say that he didn’t usually post sentimental things, and he knew they weren’t expecting that from him now.
I thought everything felt harsh and didn’t seem honest or right. Despite that, I still offered my congratulations when your challenge was over.
He explained that he felt his absence wasn’t noticed, and he hadn’t been there to offer support. He added that there was a specific reason for his non-attendance: he hadn’t received an invitation.
You know, I always say it’s important to be mindful of who you include in your celebrations. I recently heard about someone, Jamie, who pointed out that just because people showed up to congratulate him after he finished something big, it didn’t mean they were actually *invited* to celebrate with him. It’s a good reminder that congratulations and genuine inclusion aren’t always the same thing, and it’s okay to define who you want to share those special moments with.
He pointed out that if you think about it, all the people who showed up weren’t actually on the guest list. Spencer quickly countered, stating that, naturally, they were.
Jamie clarified, ‘That’s not true, people just show up to watch the finish. I didn’t ask anyone to be there.’
Spencer suggested the BBC had intentionally arranged for people to be there to surprise him when he finished.
Jamie maintained he wasn’t aware anyone was coming, explaining that he was completely focused on finishing his challenge and it consumed all his thoughts.

He explained that he was completely focused on just getting through the race, and was in a lot of pain because he hadn’t trained enough. He simply hadn’t put in the necessary practice.
I was just focused on being able to run the next day – that’s all I could think about.
The BBC probably organised everything. I was completely surprised when Ollie Proudlock showed up – I hadn’t been told he was coming.
Spencer pointed out that the BBC must have invited the person, explaining that it’s unlikely someone would just travel to Manchester hoping to run into them.
If I truly wanted to help, simply showing up in Manchester and hoping to catch a glimpse of you wouldn’t be enough. There would definitely need to be prior arrangements and communication with the BBC.
Jamie agreed with Spencer, saying, ‘There were a lot of people at the finish line, but I understand we weren’t close back then.’
If we weren’t close and didn’t talk much, I don’t understand why you’d still come around. It felt like we’d grown distant.
I’ve been following this drama for a while now, and it all started back in 2023. Apparently, things got really awkward between Spencer and Jamie when Jamie didn’t invite Spencer to his wedding with Sophie Habboo. Spencer even admitted he was pretty upset about being left off the guest list, and it’s been causing tension ever since.

Although Spencer joined Jamie and Sophie for their wedding party in Spain in June, many were surprised he missed their smaller, official ceremony in London two months earlier. He’d chosen to take a family vacation to Portugal instead.
Following the backlash from fans, Spencer clarified the situation on his podcast with Vogue, explaining that he hadn’t received an invitation and confessing he was upset about being left out.
He said he’s getting a lot of criticism for choosing to go on vacation instead of attending his best friend’s wedding, and then for posting about his trip online. He doesn’t want to speak badly about his friend, but feels there’s been a misunderstanding between them.
I mainly want to clarify what happened. I’m not complaining, but I want everyone to know that Vogue and I weren’t invited to that part of Jamie’s wedding.
He was upset about not being invited, explaining he would have traveled to Japan to be there if he had known.
Vogue also shared that Sophie looked stunning, and they were delighted for the couple. However, they admitted they weren’t aware of the event beforehand as they hadn’t received an invitation.
Following fan disappointment, the two couples discussed the misunderstanding on Jamie and Sophie’s NearlyWeds podcast, where the groom openly admitted he made a mistake.
Vogue shared that, after years of knowing Spencer, she’d never witnessed him so distressed about the mistake and the subsequent backlash he received.

Honestly, I was really shocked. I’ve known him for a long time and I’d never seen him so genuinely upset. It started with something bothering him, but then I noticed it was more than that – he’d clearly put a lot of personal thought and effort into whatever it was, and that’s when I realized how serious it was. It just hit me – he *really* cared about this.
Jamie admitted making a mistake, explaining, ‘I messed up.’ They had already had their wedding and legal ceremony in the UK, and it was a very busy time.
With all the chaos of coordinating everything, I believed Spencer and Vogue were unavailable.
Spencer was understandably annoyed, so I reached out to Vogue hoping they could help. She then told me bluntly, ‘Honestly, Jamie, things aren’t looking good,’ and I just swore in frustration.
Jamie shared that Sophie had asked about Spencer and Vogue attending their event. He explained he hadn’t invited them because he knew they’d be on vacation in Portugal.
Spencer told Jamie, ‘Honestly, you’re my best friend, and that’s why this really hurt me.’
If it were for anyone else, I wouldn’t go to such lengths, but for your wedding, I’d travel to the ends of the earth – I care about you that much.
