Speak No Evil star James McAvoy explains “walking a tightrope” with new role

As a seasoned gamer who’s survived countless virtual nightmares, I must say, Speak No Evil seems to have found the perfect balance between the chilling and the comical – a blend that keeps you on the edge of your seat, wondering if the next moment will be filled with laughter or dread.

James McAvoy aimed to strike a balance between being humorous and potentially perilous in his latest role for the film “Speak No Evil“.

In this new adaptation, based on the 2022 Danish movie, we find a story revolving around a family that spends a weekend in an Italian countryside villa, accompanied by a couple they recently encountered during their vacation.

The perfect journey turns into a horror show as the host, Paddy (McAvoy), unveils his hidden self. In a matter of swift scenes, he transforms from friendly and inviting into genuinely chilling.

As I eagerly await the premiere of the movie this week, I can’t help but share with you all (especially fellow gamers) that the filming process felt like a high-stakes balancing act, much like navigating through an intricate video game level – walking a tightrope, if you will.

The actor stated, “Generally, I believe we were clear about where the focus should be, and I had a specific approach for where I intended to direct that focus.

Occasionally, I find myself in a situation where the game director might say, “Hey, I think we’re playing it a bit safe, let’s inject some drama.” Or there are times when he or she would suggest, “We’ve got things a bit too intense here, let’s tone it down and add some humor.

We often found ourselves teetering precariously, as one misstep could lead to amusing slips on the safer side, while a mistake on the other side might result in perilous or terrifying consequences.

McAvoy commended the skills of director James Watkins, stating he had a knack for maintaining balance, ensuring that multiple possibilities could coexist simultaneously.

He also noted that the tension should remain consistent, whether we momentarily act oddly or become momentarily frightening.

Additionally, the performer discussed how the role embodies a particular type of hidden traditional masculinity, camouflaged among us.

“What makes it intriguing is that he hides his behavior beneath a facade of politeness and intelligent speech. This gives him credibility. However, is it toxic behavior, or is it simply a convincing display of accepted ‘Alpha’ masculinity?

I believe there has to be a modified form of that which remains acceptable, and this is his stance. He argues that it’s the raw, unmasked toxicity that gives it an edge, making it intriguing. However, in essence, this is exactly who he truly is.

“He’s way more complicated than just that. But it’s all the masking that makes it interesting.”

In addition to Mackenzie Davis, who you may recognize from “Happiest Season,” Alix West Lefler of “Riverdale” fame, and Scoot McNairy known for his role in “Nightbitch” are also part of the cast of Speak No Evil.

Based on initial critic feedback, the remake has received an impressive 87% score on Rotten Tomatoes, surpassing the original film’s rating slightly.

Speak No Evil arrives in cinemas on September 12 in the UK, and on September 13 in the US.
