Speak No Evil star James McAvoy defends different ending for remake

As a seasoned gamer of suspenseful thrillers and psychological horrors, I have to say that James McAvoy’s remake of “Speak No Evil” has certainly piqued my interest with its unique twist on the ending. Having spent countless hours immersed in various dark narratives, I can appreciate the subtle differences between this remake and the original Danish film.

Actor James McAvoy discusses the unique characteristics that distinguish “Speak No Evil” from its previous version, notably the twist in its conclusion.

In 2022, a reimagining of a Danish movie shares the same title. It revolves around a family who receive an unexpected invitation for a weekend getaway at an Italian countryside villa from a newfound couple they encountered during their vacation.

Eager to escape their marital woes, Louise (Mackenzie Davis) and Ben (Scoot McNairy) decide to take up the offer of a getaway weekend. However, what should have been a peaceful retreat transforms into a terrifying ordeal when they discover the true intentions of their host, Paddy (McAvoy).

In essence, both films share a similar narrative, yet their conclusions vary greatly. The denouement of Christian Tafdrup’s initial film carries a significantly darker tone compared to that of James Watkins’ adaptation.

In an exclusive interview with Digital Spy, McAvoy expressed his belief that the chosen ending was the sole option suitable for our movie, as it was the most fitting conclusion for our film.

As a gamer, I’m not implying that the alternate game version or movie isn’t effective; on the contrary, it’s an excellent piece of work. However, it delivers a unique experience compared to the one I’ve been discussing. They each cater to their audience in distinct ways, offering different emotional journeys and narratives.

McAvoy described this transformation as the original film being heavily focused on horror elements, whereas the reimagined version leans more towards thriller aspects.

In my opinion, “Speak No Evil” from 2024 seems to lean more towards a suspenseful psychological thriller rather than traditional horror. On the other hand, the actions portrayed in the other film can sometimes appear so foreign or an exaggerated form of human behavior that it gives off a horrifying vibe, making it feel like a horror movie.

James [Watkins] created something somewhat unique, which is fine, and there’s room for both, and they’re both excellent, but I believe this direction suits us best.

In a recent interview, “Speak No Evil” director James Watkins discussed the alterations made to the film’s finale compared to its initial version.

In an interview with SFX Magazine, he said, “Some viewers might watch the initial film and wonder, ‘Why hasn’t he created a remake of this movie? Why didn’t he give it a powerful, non-stop ending like that?’

“I’m not just telling their story; I’m exploring how my characters would act and make decisions based on their agency. From Christian’s movie, I’ve picked up on the satire, the examination of societal norms, and our own reactions to these elements.

You could offer a thrilling, thought-provoking roller coaster experience filled with meaningful elements. It’s a fun adventure that encourages conversation over drinks at the local tavern.

Speak No Evil arrives in cinemas on September 12 in the UK, and on September 13 in the US.
