Speak No Evil, Megan Fox sci-fi thriller, and 4 more scary movies releasing this week

As a seasoned horror enthusiast who’s seen more than a few slasher flicks and psychological thrillers to count, I must admit that the upcoming releases have me intrigued. Having grown up on classics like “Halloween” and “The Exorcist”, I can’t help but feel a twinge of nostalgia when I see titles like “Speak No Evil,” “Creeping Death,” and “Trope.

If you frequently visit movie theaters, it’s likely that you’ve watched the trailer for the Blumhouse-produced Speak No Evil remake multiple times. If, like me, you’re eagerly awaiting the film’s release to escape those ads, here’s some great news: The movie hits theaters this week! Let’s find out if all the hype is justified.

Additionally, a number of chilling horror movies are now available for video-on-demand viewing, featuring films like “Megan Fox in a sci-fi tale about a rogue sentient fembot” and “Connie Britton’s psychological thriller.” On the television front, we’re waiting a bit longer for the return of horror series and holiday baking shows, but the intriguing Shudder documentary series “Horror’s Greatest” continues every Tuesday, with a new episode on September 10 focusing on Japanese horror.

Speak No Evil (Theaters, Sept. 13)

The American version of “Speak No Evil,” which came out in 2022, is a re-make of the original Danish film with the same title. I’m puzzled as to why this remake was made since the 2022 film had a large portion in English and was quite impressive. For it to be worthwhile, it will need to pull off something extraordinary to prove its necessity.

Among the main attractions is James McAvoy’s captivating acting. And with the movie “Speak No Evil” officially premiering this week, we can finally say goodbye to constantly encountering that irritating trailer.

Subservience (VOD, Sept. 13)

Megan Fox collaborates once more with director S.K. Dale, this time for a chilling sci-fi tale concerning an artificially intelligent robot developing consciousness. The movie “Till Death” was a delightful surprise, offering a gripping and confined home invasion thriller that allowed Fox to stretch her acting abilities extensively.

I must admit, the familiarity of the storyline in this one slightly dampens my initial excitement, but I’m still open to seeing how it unfolds. Interestingly, Michele Morrone from the movie 365 Days takes on the role of the character who acquires the fembot portrayed by Fox.

Creeping Death (Screambox, Sept. 10)

Exclusive to Screambox, this chilling horror movie is ideal for the eerie autumn months, with its focus on a child yearning for a tranquil Halloween evening indoors.

Once upon a time, All Hallow’s Eve was his most cherished holiday, but after his mother was diagnosed with cancer, it lost its charm for him. However, his peaceful evening takes an unexpected turn when some friends unexpectedly arrive, each carrying a shady-looking bag that had been stolen. This theft unwittingly unleashed a vengeful Celtic spirit, and the boys now find themselves in a race against time: either they must collaborate to survive the night or offer their lives as a sacrifice to keep it at bay.

Trope (BET+, Sept. 12)

The streaming service BET+ presents an innovative slasher movie titled “Trope“, which appears to be an engaging horror flick and is referred to as “meta”. With the title and the movie trailer, it seems that “Trope” will feature numerous elements commonly found in horror films, or what you might call “horror cliches.

The trailer teases a group of friends heading to a cabin in the woods for a weekend retreat when they stumble upon a horrific conspiracy that includes mad science experiments and more.

Here After (Limited Theaters/VOD, Sept. 13)

In this gripping psychological thriller, actress Connie Britton plays a mother who grapples with the fallout following a tragic accident that deeply affects her daughter, portrayed by Freya Hannan-Mills. Struggling to cope in the aftermath of Robin’s accident, she battles to keep going.

At home and on the road to recuperation, it appears as if Robin is improving, but her mother (Britton) senses that something isn’t right and worries that she may have picked up something during her hospital stay.

Believer (Limited Theaters/VOD, Sept. 13)

In a chilling twist, when a young woman falls victim to a notorious cult leader and serial killer, her life veers into a mysterious and ominous path. She insists she can’t recall the assault, sparking speculation among her loved ones about hidden secrets and whether she’s revealing everything truthfully. The series “Believer” features performances by Lauren Lee Smith, Ella Ballentine, Peter Mooney, and Kris Holden-Ried.
