Speak No Evil ends significantly different than the original Danish film

As a seasoned gamer who has survived countless virtual apocalypses and fought my way through haunted castles, I must say that the ending of the American remake of Speak No Evil took me by surprise, much like a well-timed critical hit in an RPG. The original’s bleakness was a stark contrast to this new tale, which added a layer of suspense and intrigue that kept me hooked till the very end.

The 2022 Danish movie titled “Speak No Evil” garnered a lot of praise upon its release and gained enough popularity to inspire an American remake by Blumhouse, now playing in cinemas. Notable actors like James McAvoy, Mackenzie Davis, Aisling Franciosi, and Scoot McNairy feature in the American adaptation of “Speak No Evil”, which deviates significantly from the grim ending of the original film.

Major spoilers ahead for the end of both Speak No Evil films

The 2022 movie’s ending strays into darker, more somber territories compared to its contemporary version, without revealing specifics. It’s clear that the filmmakers dared to take a significant risk in the climax, given how closely the initial acts mirror the original script.

Speak No Evil ends with a big showdown

The 2024 movie reaches its dramatic peak with a tense confrontation between Paddy/Ciara and Louise/Ben, as they fight to save their daughter Agnes and Ant, who turns out not to be Paddy and Ciara’s biological son but a child taken from another couple.

Prior to their confrontation, Ant persuades Agnes to join him in a secret cellar. His intention is to reveal evidence that his so-called “parents” are ruthless serial killers who specifically target vacationing couples. They lure these unsuspecting victims to their home, torture them before ultimately murdering them for their money and valuables. The chilling implication is that they not only kill the adults but also the children. Each kidnapped child is murdered and replaced with a new one.

Agnes employs her mobile device to snap pictures of the objects and visuals Ant presents, which she later shows to her mother as tangible proof. Following the revelation of the secret, Louise and Ben make immediate arrangements to depart with Agnes, intending to devise a plan to save Ant as well.

However, their plan is foiled because Paddy realizes they are trying to flee. He cleverly uses Ant as a decoy, pushing him into the lake since he can’t swim. This action forces Ben to halt the vehicle to rescue him. In that brief instant, Paddy swiftly closes the gate, preventing them from driving away in their car.

Subsequently, the film transitions into a chase scenario where Louise and Ben find themselves pursued by Paddy and Ciara, attempting to safeguard themselves. At first, they manage to corner Louise and Ben, compelling Louise to move their entire bank account over to them. However, she manages to seize an opportunity with a concealed utility knife, using it to cut Paddy across the face, allowing her to break free.

In this scenario, they seek shelter within their home while summoning their culinary friend, Mike, for aid. The conflict escalates dramatically; at one point, Louise sprays Paddy in the face with sulfuric acid and later beats Mike over the head with a hammer. The situation reaches its peak when Ciara tumbles out of a window and tragically falls to her death below.

In a surprising turn of events, Paddy attempts to capture Agnes, indicating his intention might be to make her his new spouse. There seems to be a hint that he may have done something similar with Ciara, given their history spanning seventeen years. However, the situation takes an unexpected twist when Agnes seizes the moment and injects Paddy with a syringe filled with ketamine, which she had secretly taken from him earlier, intending to use it on herself before he could remove her tongue.

After Paddy being incapacitated, Ben, Louise, Agnes, and Ant have their chance to flee. However, before they do, Ant decides to avenge the wrongs done to him by brutally beating Paddy to death with a brick – a punishment for removing his tongue, slaughtering his family, and tormenting him throughout.

Well, you got it right! The revised ending, despite its grim and brutal tone, offers a glimmer of hope. Unlike the original, the heroes emerge victorious and manage to flee, though their spirits are shattered by the ordeal they’ve been through.
