Speak No Evil among our 5 favorite creepy James McAvoy performances

As a long-time admirer of James McAvoy’s diverse and captivating performances, I can confidently say that he has a knack for bringing even the most chilling characters to life on screen. From his spellbinding portrayal of Kevin Wendell in “Split” to his haunting performance as William “Bill” Denbrough in “It: Chapter 2,” McAvoy has proven time and again that he can deliver performances that are nothing short of mesmerizing.

As a devoted gamer, I’m always on the lookout for captivating performances, and James McAvoy is currently delivering one in “Speak No Evil” that’s leaving audiences spellbound. But if you’ve been following my acting journey for a while, you know I don’t shy away from taking on daring and intriguing roles. From embodying Charles Xavier in various X-Men adventures to bringing Lord Asriel to life in His Dark Materials and breathing life into Mr. Tumnus in the Chronicles of Narnia, my career has been a thrilling rollercoaster ride.

You can always count on him being one of the strongest elements of any film that he’s in. For now, we’re focusing on praising some of our favorite creepier performances of him in honor of Speak No Evil now playing in theaters.

Speak No Evil among our 5 favorite creepy James McAvoy performances

Paddy in Speak No Evil (2024)

The American adaptation of “Speak No Evil,” produced by Blumhouse Productions, has sparked mixed reactions since its release. Some viewers might feel this way due to excessive promotional materials or perhaps because enthusiasts of the original are not enthused about remaking an excellent film that was primarily in English.

But fans and critics agree that McAvoy is the standout in the 2024 film as the sinister primary antagonist Paddy.

Kevin Wendell in Split (2016)

When considering James McAvoy and the term “creepy,” it’s likely many will recall the 2016 movie directed by M. Night Shyamalan, titled “Split.” In this film, McAvoy portrays Kevin Wendell, a troubled individual with dissociative identity disorder who confines three teenagers in a subterranean complex.

McAvoy delivered outstanding performances in the different characters of this movie, so impressive that he took up the role again in the sequel film “Glass”, which is part of M. Night Shyamalan’s “Unbreakable” universe. Among these personas, “The Beast” stands out as the most terrifying due to being Kevin’s strongest form with a desire to eliminate impurities and displaying extraordinary strength. It will be intriguing to see if McAvoy’s acting in “Speak No Evil” is as impactful as his work in “Split”.

William “Bill” Denbrough in It: Chapter 2 (2019)

In the film, Bill isn’t portrayed as a villain, so technically speaking, it could be considered unfair to say so. However, James McAvoy gave an exceptional performance as the grown-up Bill Denborough, who continues to grapple with the traumatic death of his younger brother Georgie, which remains a haunting memory for him.

In the second act, I find myself revisiting the Losers’ Club after a 27-year gap, as Pennywise makes his chilling comeback to haunt Derry once more. This time, Bill and his companions are determined to vanquish the terrifying entity forever. One of the standout moments for me is the harrowing Hall of Mirrors scene in the funhouse, masterfully portrayed by McAvoy.

David Percival in Atomic Blonde (2017)

In the movie, McAvoy’s performance as MI6 agent David Percival might have been overshadowed by Charlize Theron’s star power, but he skillfully portrays a menacing and ruthless character when necessary. Percival, who is no novice to violence, kills several individuals in the film, with the most memorable being the orchestration and brutal murder of Lorraine’s lover Delphine Lasalle – an event that stands out as one of the most chilling scenes in Atomic Blonde.

Victor Frankenstein in Victor Frankenstein (2015)

As a devoted admirer, let me express that while not reaching the pinnacle of cinematic masterpieces, “Victor Frankenstein” offered an engaging reimagining of Mary Shelley’s timeless tale, featuring captivating portrayals from its principal actors, McAvoy and Radcliffe. The character of Victor may not be outright chilling, but the macabre endeavors he undertakes throughout the film are truly spine-tingling, particularly the perilous experiments he conducts in his laboratory, some of which verge on the hazardous.
