Spartacus: House of Ashur Retcons Spartacus’ Death in War of the Damned

The new series, Spartacus: House of Ashur, is changing the established story of the original Spartacus TV show by rewriting the backstory of an important character. This will likely require the show to also change the way Spartacus’s death happened.

In the fourth season of Spartacus, titled War of the Damned (2013), the main character, Spartacus, met his end. He achieved a final victory against the Roman general Crassus in a duel, but this triumph was brief. Spartacus was quickly overwhelmed and fatally wounded by Roman soldiers.

The TV show’s portrayal of Spartacus’s death isn’t historically accurate—there’s no evidence he died in a one-on-one fight with Crassus. However, Spartacus: House of Ashur is bravely changing the established story of the series.

Spartacus: House Of Ashur Will Retcon The Death Of Spartacus In War Of The Damned

While Spartacus took many creative liberties, it got some historical details right. The show’s portrayal of the gladiator school in Capua, led by Quintus Lentulus Batiatus, and the Roman army commanded by Crassus, were generally consistent with historical accounts.

The character of Ashur, a Syrian ex-gladiator who became Batiatus’ accountant after being injured, was made up for the show. While there’s no historical evidence of a person exactly like him, many enslaved people lived in Italy during that period.

The new series, Spartacus: House of Ashur, will bring back a familiar face as its main character. Ashur, who died at the end of the third season, Spartacus: Vengeance, is resurrected through a new storyline exploring a different version of events.

Bringing back Ashur, after he was killed by Naevia in season 3, requires changes to the story of season 4, where Spartacus dies. If Ashur was alive during the events of War of the Damned, he would have been fighting with Spartacus against the Romans.

Ashur’s Survival Story Depends On His Role In Killing Spartacus

I’ve been following news about the Spartacus sequel, House of Ashur, and Liam McIntyre, who played Spartacus, has hinted at things. But it’s still up in the air whether his character will actually be in it! Honestly, the whole premise of Ashur surviving in this alternate reality feels a little weird if Spartacus isn’t part of the story. It just doesn’t quite add up without him.

The show still uses the ‘Spartacus’ title, and it seems likely Ashur will be a central character because the story suggests he was involved in the original hero’s death.

It’s now apparent that House of Ashur will take place primarily after Spartacus’s death at the hands of the Romans. However, a flashback showing how the story is changing Spartacus’s death to include Ashur still feels essential.

House Of Ashur Will Be The 1st Franchise Season Without Spartacus As A Hero

A new preview for Spartacus: House of Ashur showed that Lucy Lawless will be returning as Lucretia, the wife of the late Quintus Lentulus Batiatus. However, Spartacus hasn’t appeared in any previews so far. If he does appear, it will likely be a brief appearance, and he won’t be the main character.

With Spartacus: House of Ashur, the series takes a new direction, shifting focus away from Spartacus himself. While he remains a legendary figure, creator Steven S. DeKnight wanted to tell a story through the eyes of another gladiator who once fought alongside him.
