‘South Park’ quietly ended Season 27, jumping into Season 28 with new episode

South Park” is bidding adieu to its short-lived but buzzy Season 27.

Comedy Central’s new season of the show begins this Wednesday with the sixth episode of the year. A network representative confirmed to The Times that this kicks off Season 28. The episode will also be available to stream on Paramount+ starting Thursday.

It’s not clear why “South Park” is cutting Season 27 short from its planned 10 episodes. However, viewers will still get four more episodes this year, assuming creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker follow their current plan. The confusion arose because some TV listings mistakenly labeled Wednesday’s episode as the beginning of Season 28, leading to speculation about a new season.

The latest episode of South Park, called “Twisted Christian,” centers around Cartman seemingly being possessed, and hints that he might be able to help defeat the Antichrist. The episode also features a nod to a current internet trend: the students are using the nonsensical slang term “67,” which is popular with younger generations.

Essay: ‘South Park’ has always delighted in poking the bear, whether it’s President Trump or Paramount

As ‘South Park’ reaches the midpoint of its 27th season, it’s clear that creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone remain committed to their vision and won’t compromise.

Recent episodes of the show have been very popular with viewers, continuing its tradition of satirizing current events and political figures – including President Trump, immigration policies, trade tariffs, and the Federal Communications Commission. Even the company that now streams the show globally, Paramount (which paid $1.5 billion for the rights this summer), hasn’t been safe from the show’s humor.

Season 27’s episodes were released in a somewhat irregular pattern. The first two aired weekly, then releases slowed to every other week. The latest episode, which seems to be the season finale, arrived three weeks after that on September 25th.

Television

This season of ‘South Park’ is full of jokes and references to Donald Trump and his administration. From a caricature of Kristi Noem to comments from FCC Commissioner Brendan Carr, here’s a breakdown of all the political satire.

The show received backlash for a segment that parodied Charlie Kirk, even though the episode aired before his death. Following Kirk’s fatal shooting in Utah on September 10th, Comedy Central, a Paramount company, decided to stop airing reruns of that episode. However, it remains available for streaming on Paramount+.

The first episode of Season 27 aired after the passing of creator Kirk, but Trey Parker and Matt Stone explained to the Denver Post that the delay wasn’t due to its content. They confirmed that no one had asked them to remove or change anything, and they would have spoken up if that had happened. They officially announced on September 17th that the episode simply wasn’t completed on time.

Future episodes of “South Park” will air every two weeks through Dec. 10.
