Soulja Boy told to pay $4 million after he’s found liable for sexual assault

In a civil court case, a jury in Santa Monica awarded a woman, who claimed to be Soulja Boy’s assistant, $4 million on Thursday, holding the rapper responsible for sexually assaulting and battering her while she resided at his home.

34-year-old hip-hop artist DeAndre Cortez Way, professionally known as T.I., kept a composed expression as the court’s decision was announced, reports Courthouse News Service. The ruling was solely for compensatory damages; the question of punitive damages remains unresolved.

In January 2021, a case was initiated by an accuser known as Jane Doe, and it commenced its trial in March, as indicated in court documents, in the city of Santa Monica.

The jury found the artist known for “Crank That” not guilty in charges of false imprisonment and forced resignation (constructive discharge), which were based on accusations that he made his workplace so unbearably hostile the employee felt compelled to leave. However, they did rule in favor of the accuser in matters of civil lawsuits involving sexual assault, physical violence, and gender-based misconduct.

In accordance with the court case filed in Los Angeles County Superior Court, it’s stated that the individual identified as Doe was employed as a personal assistant to a rapper back in December 2018. The filing asserted that from January 23, 2019, until December 23, 2020, Way subjected Doe to “severe physical and sexual harm” and instilled a deep-rooted fear for her safety.

In simple terms, Soulja Boy’s legal troubles are going to set him back financially – a significant amount of money, in fact, around half a million dollars, and possibly multiple high-end vehicles. A judge has granted a woman’s petition to take possession of the rapper’s assets to cover a $472,000 settlement she received.

According to court documents reviewed by The Times, Doe claimed that she was supposed to receive $500 per week but never received payment, despite working for Way seven days a week, for up to 20 hours each day. The relationship between the two reportedly turned romantic shortly after Doe started working, and it wasn’t long before the alleged abuse began. The lawsuit alleges that Way physically assaulted Doe and raped her on several occasions.

During the court proceedings, Way, who faced charges of sexual battery, false imprisonment, negligence, assault, as well as several labor code infractions, asserted that he had neither raped nor physically harmed Doe, as reported by Courthouse News Service. He also stated that Doe was not his employee but frequently stayed at his residence and rolled marijuana joints for him on various occasions.

In summary, his lawyer argued during final statements that what she received was typical compensation, consisting of a place to stay and meals, which is commonly referred to as “standard industry practice.” The media outlet reported this.

The text messages revealed that her responsibilities extended beyond a typical assistant role, encompassing duties such as arranging travel and procuring meals. A chilling message from Way was reportedly sent following an alleged assault: “I wish I had taken your life,” according to the lawsuit.

The trial will continue with determination of punitive damages.
