Sorry, Demon Slayer – New Top 10 Movie Ranking Shows Anime’s $6M Box Office Club Is Bigger Than You Think

Anime is a huge international success for Japan, but most anime movies don’t earn over 1 billion yen (about $6 million US). The first part of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle, released in 2025, is one of the few that has achieved this impressive milestone.

I was really digging through the latest box office numbers from Japan, and it’s fascinating! The Motion Picture Producers Association just released the official figures for last year (December 2024 to November 2025), and it turns out only 38 Japanese films managed to pull in over 1 billion yen. What’s even more interesting is that anime dominated – 14 of those big earners were actually anime movies! It really shows how popular anime is in Japan.

Some anime series are popular around the world, but others are mostly well-known in Japan and a few other countries. You can find a full list of the movies and how much money they made at the box office below.

Last year, 14 anime movies earned over 1 billion yen, and three of those were based on popular series from Shonen Jump. Following Demon Slayer Infinity Castle as the biggest earner, the second most successful Shonen Jump film was… Jujutsu Kaisen: Execution came in third, combining parts of Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 with the beginning of its long-awaited third season, “Culling Game.”

Japan’s second highest-grossing anime film, One-Eyed Flashback, is the 28th movie in the popular Detective Conan series. The series follows a detective who is transformed into a child after taking a strange drug.

Even though he’s small in size, Kudo travels around solving mysteries with the help of his friend from childhood, Ran Mori. In the story One-Eyed Flashback, Kudo and Ran’s father, Kogoro Mouri, investigate a strange attack at the Nobeyama Observatory, followed by the murder of Kogoro’s old coworker, Koji Sametani.

In 2025, several anime films popular with families performed very well in Japanese theaters. One standout was Doraemon: Nobita’s Art World Tales, the 44th Doraemon movie. Produced by Shin-Ei Animation, Doraemon centers around a robotic cat from the future who uses amazing gadgets to help his friend, Nobita Nori, with daily challenges and exciting adventures.

Nintama Rantaro is a long-running and popular series for kids. It follows Rantaro Inadera, a funny and clumsy ninja-in-training, as he goes to Ninjutsu Academy. A lot of the humor comes from Rantaro’s struggles with ninja skills and his tendency to mess up his schoolwork. The anime is based on the manga Failure Ninja Rantaro by Sobe Amako, which was originally published in Asahi Shogakusei Shimbun magazine from 1986 to 2018.

Several other anime films released recently surpassed 1 billion yen in box office earnings, though they didn’t quite make the top 10. These include Colorful Stage!: The Movie: A Miku That Can’t Sing (1.5 billion yen), the 4K digital remaster of Princess Mononoke (1.28 billion yen), You and Idol Precure The Movie For You! Our Kirakilala Concert (1.2 billion yen), and KING OF PRISM: Your Endless Call – Minna Kirameke Prism Tours (1.18 billion yen).
