Sorcerer Supreme #1 Review: Marvel Crowns Doctor Strange’s Replacement

The title of Sorcerer Supreme exists to protect Earth from dangers beyond our world. Although Doctor Strange previously held this position, Doctor Doom took it upon himself to become Sorcerer Supreme, believing it was necessary to save the world. Now that the position is open again, Stephen Strange is unable to return from another dimension, creating an opportunity for Scarlet Witch to claim the title, despite significant opposition.

The story continues directly after the events of both “One World Under Doom” and “The Vision & The Scarlet Witch.” Following Doctor Doom’s death, Wanda Maximoff worked to protect powerful magical artifacts – the Eye of Agamotto and the Cloak of Levitation – from being destroyed. Unexpectedly, these items, usually associated with the Sorcerer Supreme, instead attached themselves to her.

This created a difficult situation for the Vishanti, who usually choose the Sorcerer Supreme through a challenging magical contest. Not only were their attempts to intervene blocked, but they were also concerned that Wanda possessed the Darkhold – a dangerous book filled with dark magic. Doctor Strange’s assistant, Wong, also voiced similar concerns, though with less authority, after Wanda moved into the Sanctum Sanctorum.

Scarlet Witch faces new challenges and old enemies as Sorcerer Supreme

As someone who’s enjoyed Steve Orlando’s work with Scarlet Witch before, this first issue of Sorcerer Supreme felt instantly comfortable. A lot of it focuses on Wanda finishing up things from her past, getting ready for this huge new role she’s taking on. But what I really loved is how seamlessly it introduces the new direction for Doctor Strange’s comics and all the supporting characters. Honestly, it’s a brilliant place to start if you’re new to either series. And if you’re an MCU fan who felt Wanda was shortchanged after Multiverse of Madness, this comic feels like a great way to pick up her story again.

The artwork in Sorcerer Supreme is just as strong as the story. Bernard Chang’s redesigned Scarlet Witch costume feels both classic and new, reflecting her current path. He also gives Wanda a personal style in her everyday clothes, hinting at her Romani background – a small detail that adds a lot to the overall look. Ruth Redmond’s coloring is also very striking and visually appealing.

Sorcerer Supreme #1 delivers on all fronts as a fantastic first issue. It’s easy for new readers to pick up, but also rewards those familiar with previous stories. Both fans of the Scarlet Witch and the recent Doctor Strange comics are sure to enjoy it.
